  • We good? We bad?? We ugly???

Probably we've seen the good, bad, and ugly this season and it's only Feb. 1!

Half of our season has been really good - the other half a totally different story.

I think the last 3-4 games are indicative of the team we have, the mentality of this team and why our record is what it is.
I've really enjoyed the UE win and ISU beating recently!

The talent-level of the team IMO is GOOD...stronger than it's been for 6-7 seasons I'd say...maybe since Sammy and CR's last season with BU.
We basically have our core players from last season's 20-win team, and that was no fluke.
    ++++
D-Lo and Luk have stepped up this season, and Childs has taken on a bigger scoring role, and some improvement.
I'm a little disappointed in our freshmen, but they haven't had much floor time to show us much.

Aside from the speculation of the coach not getting through to the guys, I think the main problems we see are:
    1) Benching good contributors: Guys like Pittman, Hodgson, and Ari not playing AT ALL, and those guys could arguably be starters on any other Valley team...(let's face it - the league is weak). Not sure what the mystery is behind their benching. We would certainly be stronger with their contributions.

    2) The rotations in games I tend to shake my head at OFTEN.
If Lundy starts, there is something wrong. He is a good cog off the bench, but really shouldn't be playing more than 10 minutes. Poor shooter and questionable decision-making, but the upside: GREAT athleticism and energy!

What is everyone else's thoughts in Brave country?

To my eye, the success and failures this year have been 96% mental-toughness based. The biggest reason for the lack of mental toughness is the lack of strong peer leadership from our best players... it just doesn’t seem to be in their skill set YET.

That’s what we lost last year with Donte, and nobody picked up the mantle. That’s also why you see Lundy in the starting lineup (which I support).

He has shown the best acumen for leadership, and even though he isn’t top 5 talent, he’s out on the floor, at least until the mental edge is set on a given game. He started at Evansville, we had the edge, and then he sat the bench while we pulled away in the second half... but he cheered and supported like he was still out there. It’s working, and credit Wardle for recognizing this and having the stones to make the lineup changes. What we need now is for one of our top talent starters to study Lundy’s lead, man up, and follow suit.
    Compete. Defend. Rebound. Win.

Nobody has stepped up to replace Donte because there is nobody. Many people on this site said we needed to go the junior college route to address that need. We didn’t. Half way into this season people once again were saying we needed to change player rotations, the offensive scheme and stop making the same fundamental mistakes. We once again are banking our futures on foreign players that are projects and very few other upper mid major programs were willing to take a chance on. After four years of a new coaching regime, we are in the fight of our lives to get out of last place and the perpetual appearance in the MVC Tourney play-in round. Some may say I’m negative. I say I’’m factual and still a fan.

During the tenure of other BU head coaches who have struggled to bring success to BU, I always wondered is it the coach can't recruit, can't coach, or both? in JL's case you also had the tiff between BU Admin and JL.

With all the support Coach Wardle has apparently been getting during his tenure, I'm still contemplating the question above. What is preventing BU from being successful?

          Not winning enough games.

It's hard to answer the question without pointing fingers. I think we have had decent talent, though not as good as the top teams each year. So upgrading the talent and bringing in better athletes who can shoot will bring more wins. But otoh, I also feel we have underachieved somewhat. so there is enough blame to go around.

Waddle has had four years to bring in better recruits. How much time does he need? Another three or four years? The results aren’t there. I don’t think he is capable of recruiting the type of basketball players we need to be competitive in a much weaker MVC, than when he got here.
