  • Matt Roth update- gets offer from Indiana U.

Class of 2008 recruit Matt Roth is playing with his Indiana Elite team in Las Vegas this week. He has a great game last night, making 7 3-pointers and wowing a bunch of major college coaches who were there to watch the higher rated player on his team Lewis Jackson and one of the top rated players in Indiana, Tyler Zeller.

The administrator of the premium side of the Indiana Rivals site (Mike Pegram) is just now reporting that Kelvin Sampson was so impressed with his performance that he met with Roth today and offered a scholarship. There are very few details, and the offer could have some strings like a possible redshirt, but it will likely open the door for more offers from Big Ten coaches.

The only link so far is to an announcement on the premium message board about the scholarship offer. Unfortunately, this requires a password, but they are preparing a story about the offer--

But here is a clip that was posted a short time ago--

I just spoke with Mike (Pegram), and he is stuck in a traffic jam, but he had some information he wanted me to post on the message board for him.
He told me he's confirmed Matt Roth received an IU offer earlier today. He spoke to Matt prior to IU giving him the offer, but Mike will still have a story about it.

I wish Roth well wherever he ends up. With that said I don't expect him to attend BU.

IF he really wanted to be here it would be done by now.

    JMHO....

He is now 3-star on rivals.

Is this a result of his offer, or was he 3-star before? I could swear he was only 2-star...

Will Matts parents let him play for a coach with a storied past? They really seem to tow-the-line on everything else so why would they even consider this offer?

If a boy's dream is to play at the U of I, (not sure if true but have heard rumors) an offer from IL's arch enemy the I of U would be a conundrum. Kelvin is playing business 101- steal all the sales from your rival's back yard, even at a loss...

Da Coach....one source I have really disputes this offer from Sampson.
Sampson has some 5-star recruits and freaky athletes coming in for 2008. In fact, as discussed on the Illinois.rivals board, Sampson has way more offers to 2008 players than he has scholarships available, so most of them are not open offers on the table, but have contingencies.

            Please, Matt....talk to Lance Stemler.
They ran him into the ground, recruited over him, and demoted him now to a bench player, and he's a 6-8, 22 year old outside shooter.
Roth will get little playing time at Indiana if he goes there...

No you are right. He was a 2-star recruit until this evening. He was just elevated to 3-stars. Probably as a result of the report of Indiana offering.

The Indiana Rivals network site now has a more complete report on the scholarship offer extended to Matt Roth by Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson--

This may be a subscription article. Here are a couple short clips--
Roth knocked down seven trifectas Monday night in a pool game win over the Playaz Gold team.
"I had narrowed my list down this summer," said Roth. "I had two main schools with Bradley and St. Louis University but a couple schools have come up in the past two weeks that have wanted to recruit me so we are going to take our time with that and look into it. I have had my two schools and I have to decide which one is best and if it comes along we might add one in there."
Before that news broke we did get the chance to ask Roth if an Indiana offer would change his recruiting outlook.
"I think I would look into it but I am not going to come out and say that is going to change everything," said Roth

I notice Matt is still a 2-star recruit on Scout. They must not have heard about the Indiana offer yet.

Sounds to me like he really does not want to go to Bradley or St.Louis or he would not be looking at other late offers; he needs to really take a good hard look at which program he can get good min. and a good education.

Maybe his interest in IU would be something like.... "you didn't want me because you didn't think I was good enough for B10 play or I needed to redshirt in the A10... well, I am gonna show you all... I am going above the A10 and to your B10 nemesis and gonna light you up. (oh, and Bradley, thanks for being a back-up option for both you and I)"

Matt Roth's Indiana Elite lost in the Semifinals of the Super 64 in Las Vegas.
They fell to the Allanta Celtics 64-59.
Matt Roth's long distance shooting helped keep the Elite in the game, but it wasn't enough.
Roth ended with 10, Lewis Jackson had 12, Tyler Zeller had foul trouble that held him to 12.

In Indiana Elite's quarterfinal win, 77-70 over KC Pump n Run, Matt had 18 with 4 3-pointer.

                            Good news for Bradley fans.....

Mike Pegram, the head writer for the Indiana Rivals site, has an inside/premium story (now that IU is interested in Matt Roth) and he is following Matt Roth an covering his every move.

In his latest "Inside the Locker Room" report he talks with Matt Roth and quotes Matt as saying sometime in August he is going to make one visit each to the three schools that are still in the running....IU, Bradley, Saint Louis, then will likely make his decision by the end of August.

Then he questions Matt more about the level of interest and says flatly that IU's chances are slim because "Matt seems pretty loyal to those two programs" (meaning SLU and Bradley.)

Here is an article by a writer out of Kentucky who is thoroughly impressed with Matt Roth's shooting:

(he has several stories on Roth, Prosser, Lewis Jackson, and others....just scroll down and find them.)

ps-- he also talks a little about Kyle Kuric, and says the game that Duke came to watch Kuric, he had an off game, and they did not offer a scholarship.

Matt was featured in a segment on WMBD-TV Sports at 10pm.

He reiterated his interest in 2 schools (BU, SLU) making no reference to IU, and indicated that he will be making a decision prior to the beginning of his senior year so that he can then focus solely on his HS team.

They also talked to Coach Brown, who said if he had a kid like MR, he'd probably have 4-5 kids!
