  • Oklahoma hit hard for paying players

Now, I think this indiscretion does relate somewhat to BU, since we did have an incident involving the overcompensation of players, and subsequent NCAA action. Oklahoma must forfeit all of its wins from the 2005 season and loses 2 scholarships in the next 2 seasons for 2 of its players being paid for work they didn't perform.

While some may contend that Oklahoma is getting off easy because moving forward, nothing will happen (as of right now, more sanctions could be coming) to them other than losing 2 scholarships from a 100 scholarship football program. But, looking at it from a BU perspective, I would be VERY embarrassed if we had to forfeit every game of a very successful season because of an incident like this. Past precedent says that there likely won't be too much punishment handed down to Oklahoma. But relating it back to BU's case, I think our punishment was fair for our infractions, and certainly was a better scenario than what happened at Oklahoma. I consider having forfeit an entire season a MAJOR black eye for any program, not just a slap on the wrist.

I agree it is a blackeye on the program and seeing the 0-12 in '05 wont be pretty, but it really could have been worse.

Like no TV, no bowl game or instead more scholorships lost then the 2 per year, or limiting coaches ability to recruit.

Yes OU lost the wins but really didnt lose to much that will effect the program in the near or beyond future.

There COULD be more sanctions coming against the program as a whole, according to the article. We'll see if anything happens.

Honestly if the name were Bradley, Northern Illinois etc there probably would be further sanctions. The name is Oklahoma, they will not be sanctioned further unless it has to do with giving money back.

If you recall the specifics of these incidents, they were way, way worse than anything ever done at Bradley.

The top players on the football team were given jobs at a local car dealership, they were given the free use of cars to drive, and paid tens of thousands of dollars for helping to sell cars that they had nothing to do with the sales, plus the car dealer was a BIG-WHIG Oklahoma football booster arranging and giving these kids the jobs, money, and favors.

These violations were as crooked at it could get-- pure slush payments to your best players, and as soon as the scandal was made public, OU kicked the kids off the team hoping to get a lesser penalty.
I agree they cheated in the worst way and are allowed to go forward with little penalty.

The people hurt the worst are the innocent kids who helped OU win 8 football games that season, who will now be known as members of the worst (0-12) football team of all time!!

I'm surprised they even got scholarships reduced.
