  • Area Kid named "fastest rising stock"

The kid is Chas McFarland who played high school ball at Lovington and graduated last June. He got almost no looks, ezxcept a few D-III, and decided to improve his chances. he put on some weight, some muscle, and played all summer with one of the top AAU programs in the nation.
Now here's what they are saying about Chas who will be going to prep school out east:

"If there is one person whose stock has risen more than anyone else's over the past month, it's Chas McFarland
No one ???‚¬??? I repeat no one, has seen their stock rise as much as Chas McFarland over the past month. ..."

Here are a few more clips:

"The 7-foot, 200-pound big man...has seen his recruitment explode while at Worcester Academy (Mass.) over the past four weeks.

McFarland???‚¬?„?s list of suitors continues to expand. Boston College is in pursuit ???‚¬??? as is Miami, Virginia, Utah, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, George Washington, Marquette and Penn State. .."

JUST a month ago (Sept. an article claimed that only Ball State and (yuk) Chicago State were actually pursuing Chas !!
I really congratulate Chas on stepping up his game and impressing people. I have seen Chas play and know several people who have played with him and he's a tremendous kid!

A new insiders article on Chas says:
"Chas McFarland, a 7-footer at Worcester Academy (Mass.), is headed to USC this weekend for his first official visit. McFarland has also scheduled visits to Providence for Midnight Madness and to Boston College for Oct. 22.."

Chas McFarland has now begun to get more offers, causing him to change his plans and set a campus visit to Marquette this weekend. He has cancelled his visit to Providence.

The latest on Chas McFarland from Central Illinois (Lovington - which is 20 miles SE of Decatur & 70 miles south of Bloomington)
is that by going to prep school, he is getting more and more looks from big programs, when just 4 months ago after graduating from high school virtually nobody was offereing a thing. I'll bet more and more kids will be doing the prep route after seeing how much it has helped several of the Illinois kids like McFarland, Tabb, Dentmon, etc.

Anyway, Chas has narrowed his choices to Wake Forest, Marquette, & Boston College.

          This ariticle also says
"McFarland is originally from Illinois but he decided to go to prep school, and according to him it has definitely helped him on the recruiting front"

As of July 1, 2005 the only offers Chas had gotten were from Ball State and a couple D-II & D-III's. Clearly a lot of local schools failed to take an adequate look at this kid. Kind of reminds me of Patrick O'Bryant.

Back when he was in high school last year, Lovington played at my old school's holiday tournament. I didn't get a chance to see him, but I asked one of the coaches about him and he said "what a waste of height".

I would say that Chas McFarland ended up doing a little better than the original offer he got from Ball State.

He has made his announcement and is going to Wake Forest.
Might he just be the next Tim Duncan?

This article is a premium article, but here are a couple blurbs:
" One of the top centers left on the board is no longer around. Chas McFarland took a trip down to ACC country and decided he was ready to make his decision.
The 7-footer from Illinois now prepping at Worcester (Mass.) Academy is headed to Wake Forest, says his coach Ed Reilly.
"It was a tough decision for him but he's decided to go to Wake Forest"

McFarland blew up on the recruiting scene this fall and saw Wake Forest, Boston College, Southern Cal and Providence all join in the race for his signature.

Since moving to the Northeast and attending Worcester, McFarland has steadily improved as a skilled center with a nice shooting touch."

When I went down there last weekend, I felt like it was a good fit with the coaches and players, I've always wanted to play in the ACC."

              Great job Chas!
And the folks from Illinois who missed out on you wish you great success!!.

This is strange, but in this day & age not unexpected.
I checked to see the response to the signing of Chas McFarland over on the Wake Forest message board.
There is a discussion that is already 14 pages long!!
It starts off positive but before the end of the very first page,
almost all of it is negative, and even a bit ignorant and hostile.
(many of the posts are ignorant attacks on the physical appearance of some of the cheerleaders in the background of one of the photos posted.)
So I guess this kind of thoughtless posting and petty attack seems to also occur outside of Central Illinois.

Just an update on Chas who received little or no recruiting interest in Illinois but is at Worcester Academy and going next year to Wake Forest.
He is doing pretty well, classified as a 5th year senior at Worcester.
In one recent game he got 17 points, 23 rebounds, and has been averaging a double double.

                    Why the old news?

His declaration has been well documented.

I found a bit more on Chas McFarland, now that he's at Wake Forest. He played his high school ball less than 100 miles from
here at Lovington HS, and was not given much consideration by recruiters around here, and maybe BU missed the bus.
Wake has already played some preseason games, and the freshman 7-footer has already impressed.
In their first game he was 5-5, 10 points, 7 rebounds
In their 2nd game he had 8 points, 10 rebounds.

Chas' two game totals of 18 points, 17 rebounds were one of the most impressive if not the most impressive performance of any of the Wake Forest players, and Chas did not start either game.

I recalled this thread about McFarland who is a central Illinois kid at Wake Forest, a 7-footer.
The next two incoming classes have tons of big man talent, and now with Prosser gone, will this kid look to relocate?
