  • Big XII/Pac 10 Challenge

In a format similar to the Big Ten/ACC Challenge where the conferences pit members against each other each season in non-conference games,
the Pac Ten and the Big XII have agreed to do the same thing.

Lame and lackluster except for a couple games.

Lame and lackluster? Any games added with a BCS school that involves TV is hardly lame. You telling me that if the MVC could strike a deal with the Big 12 or SEC or ACC or Pac 10 it would be lame?

Not saying people will be glued to their TV sets to watch, but this is a solid move for strengthening the non-conference slates for both leagues.

This is a great move by a couple BCS conferences to in-bred their RPI's. I think there should be an SEC/BigEast Challenge as well.

As for matchups, the best ones might be Tex/UCLA, TxAM/Ariz, and maybe Ore/KansSt. Well, the Ariz/Kans and Stanf/TexTech games might be marquee but they aren't part of the 'challenge'. I am not saying the other games won't be any good. Heck, when St Peter's takes Marist to triple OT, I enjoy it.

And I would like to add further... I think the BCS conferences ought to schedule challenges amongst themselves for their non-conference. Then sprinkle in some directional and hyphenated low-lifes for easy wins.

So for example... a B10 team like Illinois could have a BCS Challenge schedule of like:

          @ Va Tech (ACC)
          vs Tex Tech (B12)
          @ Notre Dame (BE)
          vs Arizona (Pac10)

Throw in their annual game against Mizzoo, 2 games against a tuff non-BCS on neutral courts (like Temple in Chicago and Xavier in Columbus) and finish it off with 3 cream puffs at home.

Of course the MVC schools would do it, but I highly doubt that any BCS Conference would have the stones to schedule something like this with the MVC. Looking at the matchups for the Big XII-Pac 10 challenge, sure there are a few great games in there like Texas-UCLA, but most of those games aren't "must see" at all ... Iowa State vs. Oregon State ... I'm not to worried about missin that one.

Like I said, I am sure it will not glue people not associated with either league to TV sets, but it is a solid move monetarily for the league and it helps the SOS of the conference. Much like the Big Ten-ACC challenge there will be some dud matchups. Oregon State-ISU will hardly be a feature much like Penn State-Florida State is not a must watch matchup in the BigTen-ACC challenge.

Maybe the MVC should call up the Mountain West and start a challenge up. No BCS conference would have the stones to schedule the MVC so that means BCS schools scheduling each other is lame? I would watch Northern Iowa play Colorado State, Bradley play San Diego State, Creighton travel to the Pit to play Alford and New Mexico, Southern Illinois play UNLV, Illinois State play Utah, Wichita State play Wyoming, Drake play TCU, Indiana State play BYU, etc. But then I am sure that would be lame and lackluster!
