Re: Hostile and abusive mascot update

Arkansas State, whose nickname and mascot is the Indians, has finally concluded a committee review and recommended changing their name and mascot.
The chancellor at Arkansas State said the school would retire its Indian mascot, targeted by an NCAA ban on mascots that are ethnically or racially hostile or abusive.
The Arkansas State macot was a silly Indian caricature, similar to one Bradley dropped decades ago.--
This move shows that Arkansas State is a bit slower than all other schools to comply with the 2005 edict by the NCAA to ban ethnically or racially hostile or abusive mascots and nicknames. It has only taken them 2 years to decide they would comply with the mascot part of the ban.
But what about the nickname part of the ban? Despite their reluctant move to drop their Indian mascot, they retain their nickname The Indians and The Lady Indians. It seems to me that these nicknames are just as ethnically hostile and abusive as the mascot. Yet they have no plans to change them and the NCAA hasn't demanded it.
Well, nobody ever accused the NCAA of being consistent with this thing.--

SD State (I think) is the Aztecs. They are not required to change their mascot/name because the Aztecs aren't Indians from the USA.

What about team names like Pioneers, Vikings, Norse, etc...
and even team names like Deacons, Padres, etc..
Many of us are direct descendants of the very people those shcools are characterizing and at times poking fun at.
Hypocrisy is the right word.
Until every school in America chooses a mascot that's a plant or tree, the argument will never be solved.
