  • CBS Sportsline preseason Top 25

Gary Parrish of CBS Sportsline posts his first preseason Top 25.
IMO, he has Kansas (#3) way too high. They were picked very high the last 2 years, and fell short. This year, their top player, Brandon Rush, is coming off a very serious knee injury and reconstruction, and Parrish talks as if it have no effect on him.
He says the same thing about Derrick Caracter of Louisville, although he is not as important to them as Rush is to Kansas. But interestingly, he cites Bill Walker's knee injury as a reason that Kansas State might underachieve. Strange.

3 Bradley opponents, Michigan State, Butler, and SIU are in his Top 25.

There is some bizarre logic in some of Parrish's picks.--
He cites an incoming freshman and a 2008 recruit (?) in picking Texas A&M #22.
Pittsburgh at #24 with what they've lost the last 2 years is too high.
7 Pac 10 teams in the top 23 is a little too much.
Some teams I think are rated too high-- Washington State, Stanford, Washington, Alabama, and Duke.
It seems Parrish is caught up in the hype of a bunch of incoming freshmen like Kyle Singler (Duke), Eric Gordon (Indiana), OJ Mayo (USC), and DeAndre Jordan (Tex A&M).

Was Parish the one that had 3 MVC teams in the top 16 in his pre-season top 25 last year?

But come early January, it isn't as easy to rank 3 MVC teams.

Just a bunch of hot air coming out of the Drive-by media.

I didn't read it that way Da Coach. I think Parrish was just making note of A&M's potential long term staying power. The 2008 recruit had nothing to do with where he picked A&M this year.

      Here is what he said:

A recent commitment from Class of 2008 star Anthony Jones, regarded as the best prospect in Texas, is an indication that A&M just might achieve long-term success.

As noted elsewhere, some of the 2006 predictions are still online and can be dug out to see how accurate they were.

Here is Gary Parrish's 2006 preseason preview:

(he correctly picks only ONE of the eventual Final Four, and the one he picks was the easy one...
defending champ-Florida, and didn't even have Ohio State in his Top 10)

Of course since Florida won the 2006 title and had everyone returning,
it was a no-brainer that everyone picked them to return to the Final Four.

But how many of the remaining three Final Four teams did CHN pick?
Answer....none....they picked Florida, UNC, Kansas, and Wisconsin.

Only one of their four picks actually made the Final Four and one of them didn't even make the Sweet Sixteen.

Most other 2006 prognosticators were likewise, and correctly picked only one (the obvious one, Florida)
of the 2007 Final Four teams.
(also three other of their Top 20 teams, Duke, LSU, & Washington, finished at or under
.500 in their conferences, and their #9 team LSU was 5-11!)
We always hear about how well they do when they hit their picks, but in reality,
most years these so-called experts do no better than spinning the wheel or flipping a coin.

But it's still fun to talk about their picks and I am sure we'll do it again this year!

PS-- here are some more 2006 preseason previews:

(these guys had Duke at #5, LSU at #6)

These guys picked Glen "Big Baby" Davis as 1st Team All American

So in the end...their 2006 reports didn't have any great accuracy to hoot and holler about.

Talk about underachieving, I could say the same about Memphis to a degree.
He picks them #1, but does not mention that every year they have the most talent and still falter. Their relatively easy schedule (their SOS last year was the weakest of any Top-20 team) does not prepare them for the postseason. Then as soon as they face a really tough team (Ohio St. in 2007, UCLA in 2006, St. Joe's in 2005, etc.) they bow out.
They recruit well and get great players, but I am suspect of their coaching.

I totally disagree. I think Calipari is a great coach. Unfortunately, he faces a few problems with his program.

First, he is in a weak conference so his teams coast through the regular season and appear better than they really are come tourney time. Thus, they are over-rated and appear to "choke" when they play a good team.

Second, he always has highly talented players but faces two problems:

              1) They either leave for greener pastures (NBA) after one or two years, thus preventing his program from having seasoned leaders and a team that has experience playing together (unlike the Dukes, Michigan States, and a few other elite programs with good coaches), and

              2) These highly-prized prima-donnas that he recruits often come from "rough" backgrounds and get kicked out or leave after a year or two.

This causes his program to lack the quality 4-year starter that so many other coaches have. Put him in a good conference and I think you'd see a different level of tournament tested success.

I really don't think you can question his ability to coach or recruit, though. He has taken an under-manned, inexperienced team up against the likes of an experienced Duke or Gonzaga team and held his own or pulled off an upset. I do question his lack of morals, however, when it comes to recruiting the most talented players. Too often he ends up recruiting punks and thugs (ala Huggins).

I think he is a good coach also, but his players are sometimes less than coachable.

KU at 3 is an illustration of what your name will do for you. That's RIDICULOUS. Brandon Rush has a severely torn ACL, which is the only reason he's "coming back." This team takes a lot of losses after BARELY getting by SIU. But the team wears the name of a large Midwestern state across the chest, so they're #3. That's the way it works.

Andy Katz of ESPN updated his Top 25. He does not include any MVC teams, and just 3 midmajors (#15 Gonzaga, #22 Xavier, and #23 Davidson?). He ranks a lot of teams like Kansas, Indiana, Duke, Pitt, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Stanford, USC, Wisconsin, and Florida based mostly just on potential.

Andy Katz ranks the Top 25 after Monday's deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft.

But Kansas is a safe choice.
With all the cushy teams they schedule at home, and the fact that the big losses (Durant, Curry, etc.) on many of their opponents will cause a down year in the B12, then Kansas will win way more than lose.
I'm surprised Butler doesn't get more respect.
Maybe they think the loss of their coach will make them mediocre.
