  • SIU's plans for a new facility

A couple years ago SIU launched a new plan to raise funds and build new ON-CAMPUS athletic facilities and other projects.

Here is the concept for their new/renovated arena:

    and other athletic facilities:

But now two years have gone by, and reportedly fund raising is way, way behind schedule.
The April Board of Trustees meeting proposed a significant hike in tuitions and fees and earmarked this extra money to try to help get the dollars flowing.
It even acknowledges that progress on improving and renovating has been very slow.

I just heard from a friend who is an alum and donor to SIU and he has recieved info urging a stepped up level of giving, in order to catch up, especially since lots of dollars are now needed for the big hike in Chris Lowery's salary.
Their renovations may get put on hold for an extended period.

Why don't they ask their famous alumni like Jenni McCarthy?

SIU does have a billionaire alumnus who lives in Dallas. His name is Kenny Troutt and he is nuts about basketball. He flys his middle-school kids and a group of select team mates around the country on his private jet playing in basketball tournaments. If SIU is not deep in this guy's pocket, then the school needs a new Head of Development.

Man that is simply awesome. Some will say that it is complete excess but those kids will be better people because of the experiences they are encountering and will have memories that will be life long.

SIU your right better be in that guys pockets deep.

Well, I will admit it here in public. I went to Southern. I had season tickets when I went to school there and I rooted for them. However I still clapped for Bradley at the BU games and it was hard to do. That was during the Dion Thurman time period. I always thought BU had a good starting lineup and was just underachieving
but none of the SIU fans agreed and Bradley didn't back me up.

Anyway the plans for the stadium look like a waste of money because they don't look very different from the current Arena. They just slapped a wall of glass on it. It doesn't show the inside of the Arena though so who knows.
