  • Stan Albeck story from BUBraves.com

For those who were around when Stan Albeck coached Bradley (1986-1991) you'll remember Stan as one of the nicest guys who ever lived.
Here is a story from BUBraves.com with links to stories about how Stan is doing now, and how he has connections to both of the teams in the NBA finals.

With two of his former teams competing in the NBA Finals, former Bradley University basketball player and head coach Stan Albeck has been the subject of several recent newspaper and television features.? Albeck was an assistant coach for the NBA's Toronto Raptors when he suffered a stroke in the team's locker room prior to a game against the Miami Heat Dec. 23, 2001.? Albeck has since moved to San Antonio, where he regularly attends Spurs games as a special guest of the franchise.?

The first link on the BU page is to a video clip of a nice report and interview that's worth watching.

I was just about to post this, thanks for posting it DC.

Stan was certainly a great guy to be around. His tenure may not have ended the way anyone wanted it to, but he was the right guy for the job when Dick Versace left town, and made Hersey Hawkins into a star. I know his '88-'89 team will always be a special one for me.

I suspect you meant the 87-88 team when Hawkins, Thomas, Jones, Powell, Trimpe, Mordini, and Bertolini were all seniors, along with underclassmen Luke Jackson, Anthony Manual, Paul Wilson, Mike Cash, Jay Schell, and Steve Bayless. They went 26-5 in Albeck's second season, was his only postseason appearance as BU played Auburn in Atlanta in the 1988 NCAA. That was a great year, and I had a great time in Atlanta.

88-89 was the first of Albecks final 3 losing years.
Here are Stan's records for his 5 seasons at Bradley.

      1986-87 17-12
      1987-88 26-5
      1988-89 13-14
      1989-90 11-20
      1990-91 8-20
