  • New Rivals Rankings - Illinois Class of 2008

In the Class of 2008, in Illinois here's how they rank 'em:
    (Shumpert has zoomed to #2)

Top 25 class of 2008 in-state hoops prospects

    1. DeAndre Liggins point guard Chicago Washington
Liggins makes everyone around him better and finds a way to get the ball to his teammates in position to score. If he gets a consistent jump shot look out.

    2. Iman Shumpert shooting guard Oak Park River Forest
Shumpert has seen his stock soar this spring, but most of the Midwestern college coaches and talent evaluators already knew about him. He is the ultimate combo guard.

    3. Michael Dunigan center Chicago Farragut
Big Mike can be the most dominant player on the list and could easily be at the top of this list. He seems to dunk everything he gets within three feet, and when he polishes up his low post game and his shooting he is a top 25 player nationally.

    4. Matt Humphrey shooting guard Chicago Hales Franciscan
The long, lean athlete has seen him self become a priority for numerous schools around the country because of his play this spring. His shot is back on track and he has bounced back into the top 5 for 2008.

    5. Josh Crittle power forward Chicago Hales Franciscan
The true power forward looks to be in better condition and seems to have turned the corner as a player. He has done a great job of finishing around the hoop and he is running the floor much better.

    6. Stan Simpson center Chicago Leo
Potential. Simpson has it and you can see someone is beginning to work with him and he is getting it slowly but surely.

    7. Verdell Jones point guard Champaign Central
Smooth as silk point guard that has great vision and is a true point guard. Questions remain about his strength and athleticism, but his stock is on the rise.

    8. Ryan Hare wing Chicago Marshall
6-foot-4 athletic slasher that is really a small forward. Gets overlooked many times and has been overshadowed by his teammates the last couple of years. He has been very good for the Illinois Fire this sporing.

    9. Nick Fruendt swingman Batavia
Northwestern commit is fundamentally sound, but isn't a great athlete. He can score, and that is something that the Wildcats can use.

    10. Kevin Dillard point guard Homewood Flossmoor
SIU commitment saw his stock soar this spring as he led his Meanstreets AAU squad to victory after victory. Shoots a set shot, but it keeps going in.

    11. Brett Thompson 6'11 C Vienna St. Louis Commitment

    12. Lewis Jackson 5'9 PG Decatur Eisenhower

    13. Jon Moran 6'0 PG Jacobs

    14. Luke Fabrizius 6'9 F Hersey

    15. Dion Dixon 6'2 G Chicago Crane

    16. Kenyon Smith 6'1 G Chicago Simeon

    17. John Shurna 6'8 F Glenbard West Northwestern Commitment

    18. Matt Roth 6'2 G Washington

    19. Rob Belcore 6'5 SF Loyola

    20. Tyler Storm 6'7 F Geneseo

    21. Jeremy Robinson 6'8 F Decatur Eisenhower

    22. Daniel Barnes 6'2 G Oak Park River Forest

    23. A.J. Rompza 5'8 G Whitney Young

    24. Kenny Leverette 6'4 WG O'Fallon

    25. Donald Stewart 6'5 F Champaign Central

**** I am kind of surprised how low Lewis Jackson and Matt Roth are, but as soon as they commit, then if it's a major they'll go up and if it's a midmajor, it'll go down.

One other brand new recruiting blurb says #1, DeAndre Liggins has narrowed his choices to JUST TWO.
Memphis and Illinois........this has got to bring back ill memories for the Illini fans of the Derrick rose recruiting!

Bocot at #9 ahead of guys like Fay, Cole, & Flowers who have led their teams all the way to State?
Has Bocot's team ever won a regional?

I have always thought that some of the national recruiting guys are more impressed with flashy play and hot-dogging, and less interested in how the kid can actualy fit with teammates and help them win. Thus Bocot at #9.
But, of course, if all they see is AAU play, then it's understandable, as it's often all about showmanship and trying to gather individual attention.

I was checking on a few message boards and saw several comments about Mustapha Farrakhan....and even some rumble that he might be interested in bolting and transferring.
Farrakhan as many will recall is a Class of 2007 (same class as Sam Maniscalco) shooting guard from Illinois who went to Virginia.
Farrakhan was ranked just outside the Top 10 in Illinois and was ahead of Carlton Fay, Sam M., and Bill Cole.

Last March, when BU went to Virginia and won, Farrakhan did not play in that game.

But, he did play a fair bit last year in his freshman season....19 games and looked promising.
So much so that at the beginning of this season he was a starter, then he lost his starting spot, and now is so far down on the playing rotation, that he isn't even getting into games much now.
But his stats have been terrible...3 ppg, 0.5 rpg, 37% shooting, more TO's per minute played than anyone else on the team.

But he is a talented 6-4 SG, so if he transfers....he will probably look for somewhere claser to home....Indiana State had been after him before he chose Virginia.
