I'm not sure that SM is the guy I would want to replace CB ......so I for one hope it is just a rumor!
I think Steve Merfeld would be as good of a replacement as you could possibly get. How many college teams, let alone MVC teams, have assistant coaches with 10 years of DI head coaching experience? Things didn't work for Merfeld at EU, but I am not sure too many people could win there at this point. His record at Hampton is outstanding, and he recruited some great players while an assistant at Bowling Green (which happened to be when our athletic director was at Bowling Green as well ). Merfeld will be a great addition to the staff.

I agree, BBrave.....you can't discount his head coaching experience. Maybe his results at EU weren't very good, but there's no reason he couldn't have success as an assistant coach at BU.
I suspect the only reason we haven't heard an announcement yet is he and KK are still working out the financial terms of his contract.
What sort of triangle is this? Am I stating this correctly?
Merfield gets fired at EU.
SIUE head coach Marty Simmons gets hired on at EU.
BU assistant (and prior to BU, at EU) Assistant is hired for the SIUE head coaching job.
Now Merfield might go from EU to BU?

So......do you think the Braves staff is ready to coach the Bigs? Does JL hire an asst who will guide the Bigs or do you look for someone from the Windy City to help out with recruiting? My worry with SM is his recruiting....not sure he would really help out there......or was that the best he could get to come to UE?

I think you'll be suprised at Merf's recruiting abilities. He brought in some very good players while an assistant at BGSU and Hampton, including former NBA Lottery Pick Antonio Daniels. Plus, with a guy with as much head coaching experience as Merfeld has, Jim will be able to focus some more energy on recruiting as well. No one sells BU better than Jim Les.
As far as coaching the bigs, Matt Webster was an all-league caliber big for Merfeld at EU. Plus, we're running a guard-oriented offense anyways, and look to be for the forseeable future.
We maybe still running the 4 guard O but Mikes concerns are legit IMO. We have quite a bit of size coming in and it would really be nice if we had someone that specialized in that area.
Massive Mike WIlliams....Donald Powell.....how about Jerry McNamara from Alaska?

Why is it a prerequisite that a big man coach has to be a former big man? I don't think Al Biancalana was a post giant, but he was known for developing big guys. He's got one in the NBA right now. I think we're worrying about the wrong things here.
Don't get me started about Al and don't give him much credit for developing anything.
It's not an Al B argument. The argument is that you don't have to be a former post giant or even a former post player to be able to teach post play. We're going to have 2 DI head coaches on our staff with a combined 15+ years of head coaching experience, and 30+ years of college coaching experience. I think we'll be able to teach post play.
Evansville to my memory pounded us pretty good
in the paint. It was their not so athletic, need to
have an open three guards that pushed them down
toward the MVC celler. Put my 5-cent vote to Steve
Merfield.
Nothing, as I reminded my friend MexBrave is in a
vacuum. Chuck gave Jim Les a 2 year window. I will
guarantee you that Chuck was looking for his own
replacement the moment he took the job. From what
little I know from Coach Buesh, I expect nothing less.
Sheeze, it's not rocket science. You watch a team
warm up and think that is familiar. then you watch
the first defensive sets and think that's what I would
have done. You check for the first time out and you
think coach you need one there.
Chuck would not leave if things were unraveling. He'll
be a little more day to day than Versace, but all will live
and die with the fortunes of the Braves. Wing
