  • Majerus, SLU, The Valley...

As Im sure most of you know, St. Louis has been trying to convince Majerus that he should come to SLU and coach basketball. This may have been discussed to death on here, but if it was I missed it. It was pointed out by the media in St. Louis that Majerus suggested SLU consider a move to the Valley, and that it was a more appropriate conference for the Billikans, and supposedly the SLU president said that was something they would look into if Majerus became their new coach. Well, I wasnt real sure how I felt about this. I was on valleytalk.net and came across this post from a SIU fan:

"As to SLU's advantages, yes, media market is near the top of the list. But, also (2) they have a new arena being built, (3) they are a good academic school with a good law school and a very highly rated medical school, a good business school, and lots of other good academic programs. Also, (4) they have a decent enrollment for a private school with a large alumni base, (5) they would be another Catholic school for Creighton to partner with, (6) they are at the heart of the Missouri Valley Conference location wise. Further, (7) their sports programs are down, but have been traditionally good. They would immediately be in the upper tier of the Valley simply because of the amount of money they are willing to spend to get better. ( A new rival for SIU and MSU. PLUS, (9) there is some advantage simply to the fact that a team would leave the A-10 to come to the Valley. It is a long term move toward the legitimation of the Valley.

Besides the fact that their team has been down in the past couple of years, I really do not see any drawbacks to this move."

I like the points this guy makes, and it would be nice to pick up the St. Louis market. If we added SLU and Butler, we would add the St. Louis and Indy Markets. I also realy like the idea he points out about a team leaving the A10 for the valley. I know that this is A LOT of speculation and Majerus may just be shopping around to keep his name in the media, but I would love to see Majerus and SLU wind up in our conference.

Yeah...discussion on the Majerus/SLU issue is spread out over several different topic headlines in the past couple days.

and on top of that, this morning's paper had a column by Kirk
Wessler in which he touched on all the same issues with Majerus
all over again, as if he was writing a review of the discussion on
our board. (including the obligatory fat-guy puns and jokes. --
ps--maybe Phil Luciano should go after him for his jokes the way
    they went after Imus!)
"Coach plays role of heavy in SLU talks"

PS-- KW has even more in his blog

IMO, SLU needs the Valley more than the Valley needs SLU at this time.

I wouldn't want to add another school just to increase our "visibility" in the St. Louis market or elsewhere. We're already pretty visible in the STL area, thanks to the conference tournament and SIU's success.

However, if given the opportunity to tap 2 of the largest midwestern markets (Chicago, Indy, St. Louis), I think the Valley should at least consider all the options.

O&B...in response to your "Signature", did anyone else beside me notice how
absolutely irrelevant Billy Packer is once there is no game for himself to display his arrogance or ignorance and once he stops making a fool of himself.
In fact, Packer will be all but invisible and meaningless until next fall.
Who knows, maybe that's the way he wants it?

I really should update that, since Packer won't be on the big stage again until next season. I found that quote in some basketball writer's blog before the tournament, and it just really fit my opinion of him.

Whoo-hoo. Congrats to Rick and SLU. Now let's ink a home-n-home with 'em RIGHT NOW.

Ok, the article says Majerus was the only coach considered and interviewed. Why don't they have to show they considered minorities? I keep recalling that Bradley was required to advertise the job publically for 14 days, and show that minorities were given fair and equal consideration. Where are all the loud activists?

I'm no Billy Packer fan, but what do you expect him to do? Call summer league games?
I don't see or hear much from Tim McCarver during baseball's offseason.

So you concede he has no knowledge in any other sport besides college basketball. And there is very serious doubt any time you listen to him that he has much knowledge even ni college basketball.
Guys like Dave Snell, Lee Hall, etc....are highly visible all year and don't disappear 6-8 months a year.
They have talent and use it all year round.

Well, I knew it couldn't last for long...Billy Packer is baaack!
I really don't think I'll sign up for his "podcasts".
Penn Shore, president of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Breakfast Club of the Triangle, has announced the release of Billy Packer’s podcast...

Rick Majerus just signed a juco kid named Barry Eberhardt, who has been mentioned on our board before
and BU has at least been in contact with him.

Here is a previous post about Eberhardt from January

and today's issue of the St. Louis Post Dispatch says this:

"Barry Eberhardt at Coffeyville Community College, signed with SLU to fill one of the available roster spots....

Eberhardt visited SLU before the school fired head coach Brad Soderberg.
SLU???‚¬?„?s primary competition for him was Miami (Ohio) University. Earlier, Dayton had showed some interest.
Bradley, Wichita State, UNLV, Central Michigan, Indiana State and Butler were also on his radar screen.
