  • UNI lands another committment

    He is another shooting guard.
6-3 Jermaine Davis from Southeastern CC, IA, will arrive at UNI in fall of 2008.

UNI has a glut at the guard position, and has been having kids leave recently because of playing time issues, and yet at least 3 new incoming guys this year, and this 2008 commit are off guards/combo guard.

I do believe next year Josten is a Senior though and McKowen is already gone so they do need some help there

How many guards do most schools have? UNI plays a 3 guard lineup, so how many should they have? They have 5 bigs, which is all they need, why should they get more post players?

UNI had Jones and McKowen leave this year, and brought in Culliver (Juco PG) and Montgomery.

Next Year, UNI loses Josten and Viet. UNI now has Jermain Davis (Wing) and will probably bring in one more guard.

      Their scholy forecast is:

      2007:
      PG: Ahlegbe (So.), Culliver (Jr.)
SG: Josten (Sr.), Reed (Jr.), Montgomery (Fr.)
SF: Brown (Jr.), Viet (Sr.), Dunham (RFr.),
PF: Koch (So.), Barz (Fr.), O'Rear (Fr.)
      C: Coleman (Sr.), Eglseder (So.)

      2008:
      PG: Ahlegbe (Jr.), Culliver (Sr.)
SG: Reed (Sr.), Montgomery (So.), Davis (Jr.)
      SF: Brown (Sr.), Dunham (So.),
PF: Koch (Jr.), O'Rear (So.), Pehl (Fr.)
      C: Eglseder (Jr.),Barz (So.)

      1 scholy remaining for 2008

But didn't Illinois native Jones just leave citing a glut at the guard position as his reason?

Jones didn't feel as though he could get more playing time next season. If you look at the position by position breakdown, there is not necessarily more scholarship-athletes at the guard positions compared to last year, but there may be more talent. Last year, UNI played 10 guys majorily. 6 guards and 4 bigs. This year, UNI graduated 1 post, 1 guard, and another guard left (Jones) that played in that top ten. UNI will RS one of the posts (probably Barz) coming in. That leaves 4 posts for playing time. UNI has 4 guards coming in. Two redshirted last season, 1 is a JC Point Guard, and the other may redshirt. UNI has the ability to go 11 deep next year, and I think with the experience that is possible.

The year that Davis comes in, Viet and Josten will graduate, and UNI will probably bring in an additional guard that may RS. That would keep the similar 11 man rotation.

But, let's be honest. If you have a glut of guards coming back, that just means that you have good, strong competition on your team. I think that's what we all want on our teams, whether it's UNI or Bradley, right? I believe that Bradley has similar numbers of guards/posts as UNI does. Am I correct? I tried to figure it out, and think I did, but with transfers in/defections out, I wasn't able to get it done completely.
