  • Let's lighten things up with a question...

It has been a tough day on the board for many reasons, so I thought maybe I would lighten things up.

Many of us would like BU to land a "high-profile" recruit. Well, BU did back in the 70's when Versace signed Mitchell Anderson. In one of his first games (maybe his first) BU played a DePaul team at the fieldhouse. That DePaul team had a great freshman also--Mark Agguire. These were 2 of the best freshman in the country (from Chicago) playing each other.

Now here's where the fun comes in. If Anderson's butt would have been a large as Agguire's, would BU have received that NCAA bid in 1982 and would Anderson go on to have a better NBA career than Agguire?

I think Mitchell also wasn't as mean as Aguirre. Nice guys sometimes don't get noticed as well in the pros. Maybe Mitchell just needed to be a little meaner and selfish like Aguirre. But he made a good living in Europe.

Coach you mentioned in the other thread how our recruiting went south after the NIT with Versace trying to recruit more nationally.

One of those close but no cigars was Wayman Tisdale. Imagine how different things might have been if he would have committed.

Wonder how close he was on others of name during that timeframe.

Waymon Tisdale, yes, great college player... also had a big butt. Wait, maybe Coach Les should start recruiting guys with bigger butts?

Here is another one few will remember--
Dick Versace thought he had landed a 6'11" stud named Barry Sumpter from Brooklyn, Illinois in 1983. Sumpter told Versace he was committing to Bradley, but the night before he was to sign, he had a dream that he should sign with Louisville, instead. So the next day he indeed changed his mind and signed with Louisville. I think he was a reserve on the 1986 Louisville team that beat Bradley in the 2nd round NCAA game in Ogden, Utah, and went on to win the 1986 National Championship. When Louisville brought in superstar Pervis Ellison in 1985, Sumpter became a reserve, and eventually transferred to Austin Peay. He played well there and was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the 3rd round of the 1988 NBA draft - 56th overall (the same draft that Hersey Hawkins was picked #6. He played 1 minute in 1 game in his NBA career, perhaps the shortest NBA career in history. But if he had been on that team with Hawkins and crew, who knows how far they could have gone in 1986.
