  • Where's the scholarship coming from

There has been a lot of talk about potential JC signings but I still don't understand how we can be expecting to sign a new player when we have no open scholarships.

I am confused with how we continue to recruit and have official campus visits when there is no room on the roster.

Any new idea on who is leaving or how this would be handled?

There has been alot of specualtion but I think it makes posters uncomfortable to continue to discuss for a variety of reasons......one player MIGHT not make it due to grades but MOST hope he does. We wish him well.

Another guy that has been oft injured and didn't play much has some wondering about a possible transfer but again MOST wish him well and would love to see what he can do at 100% IF he can ever be 100%....

We trust the coaching staff on this issue....

Personally I think its a bit "unfair" for us to keep throwing these names out. Lets just hope it works out for all involved.

      Welcome to the board InMnBob1.

It's intersting and tempting to speculate about where another scholarship will come from. Obviously either an incoming recruit would not arrive, or a current rostered player would leave.
There has been nothing stated by the coaching staff about this.
Beyond this generalization, we would prefer not to foster speculation publically on this forum about individuals by name.

For newer posters I will reiterate that being a "pro-Bradley" message board we feel obligated to protect the personal privacy of the individual student athletes.

So please check the rules for posting. No speculating on the academic status or scholarship status of specific players by name unless such information has already been noted publically, or is generally known to be a fact. Sorry to dampen some of the fun of a message board, but I think most true Bradley fans here agree with this policy.

I get the rumor part etc. I guess my question is in fairness to the current players and the players that they are bringing in. Obviously all involved can do the math and see that there is no room. How would this be handled in the recruiting process?

But we have specualted DC haven't we....I think we have mentioned every name possible. I just feel its getting tougher for us to talk about as the time draws near and the possible reality sets in.

No one hopes or wishes anyone leaves or doesn't qualify but it is the nature of the beast.

I agree the more we discuss specific names the more it seems like we are "fostering specualtion"......its time to just wait and see and trust the staff...IMO of course. Others may disagree..

Nearly every Division I coach has to deal with this kind of thing. It would be similar to the Saihou Jassey situation. If a coach can improve his team or if a player is better suited elsewhere the staff will discuss it with that student and help him find the place that is best for him. The newswires are loaded right now with reports of player transfering. Some leave voluntarily to seek more playing time, and others leave because the coaches encourage it.

I totally agree that at this point it dosen't do us any good to say "this might happen or that might happen." I do wonder what the players think when JL is still bringing in recruits. They obviously know more than we do about what is going on inside the program. At this point we all need to believe that JL and Co. know what they are doing and everything will work itself out.

By the way....is anyone 100% cetain that CC was actually here on campus? I never did hear of any actual "sightings". Just curious....

He was here and several have now testified to seeing him.

CC has officially become an urban legend! Just like Sasquatch, and UFOs...
People need to recognize there is a huge difference between playing hard, and playing well...

I think it is best to just assume the incoming recruit will finance his own way and become a Recruited Walk-On.

Now - with that assumption, can we leave the topic alone (about how we are gonna have another player)?

I guess that was my original question too about what the current players and the recruits think when they all know how many scholarships are available and still see the coaching staff actively recuiting. Just wondering how this would be handled.

Let's say one of our major recruits says yes. Do we then to go someone on the team and say you are out? Do we tell the recruit that he can't sing until another one doesn't make grades?

I just think that this is an interesting period in college basketball recruiting in general that may complicate our recruiting position competitively in particular.

                      thoughts?

Every college coach has to handle these situations. Mark Turgeon yanked a couple of his players' scholarships after their season ended to free up scholarships to recruit other players.
Steve Merfeld, Porter Moser, and several other MVC coaches have done the same in recent years. And coaches at the major schools do it nearly every year if they think they can improve their team.
I don't see a problem with these kinds of moves, as long as the schools help the kids involved find appropriate opportunities elsewhere. Bradley did that with Saihou Jassey, and I would expect they would handle another situation similarly.

At this time, we already know at least 1 of Bradley's remaining recruits does not currently qualify. The most intelligent thing would be if the staff prepared contingency plans. If they didn't, there would be the usual people waiting to criticise them.

I know that scholarships are a one year deal. What's the dates on renewals or cancellations?

I don't know if the NCAA has specific dates for the beginning and end of the yearly scholarship.
I believe it is based on the school year of each school.

Based on what I have seen and heard, all scholarships are basically "renewable" from year to year, starting at fall enrollment, but...

Of course a player can leave any time, and he isn't viewed as having broken a contractual agreement and doesn't owe the university anything if he leaves in midterm.

And likewise, a coach can expel a student on scholarship and revoke the scholarship at any time, but it generally has to be a "due cause" or sufficient reason.

But at the end of each season, the coach can and generally does meet with each player and if it is deemed they aren't going to fit in or be happy, the coach can counsel the kid to go elsewhere and can even revoke the scholarship.
It has been done for no reason other than the lack of skill development on the player's part.
