yes, that's correct, back in the 70's you could get 4-5 plates full for a dollar.

My college roomate once had a spaghetti eating contest at Avanti's during this "all you can eat" fiasco. He was all skin and bones and won -- reminded me of that little Japanese hot dog eating king

He made it back to his room, got sick, and passed out!

I'm torn between Richard's and LaBamba for the late-night vote. Oh, and Hoops. (Sorry, I've lived with/been DD for guys for far too long ... ) I think it depends on level of drunkness...

all are solid choices really... though LaBamba was a place I went to so much during school since it was so close. These days I think I end up at Hoops or Richards much more often.

Burger Barge was mentioned, but I don't think the spot across the street was...Vertucci's! It's actually in a shell(?) gas station, but it's awesome. Go on a Friday for the Steak sandwich lunch special.

Also, Beef O'Brady's has become a HUGE favorite of mine. Sports bar/family eatery, TONS of tv's and NO SMOKING. Food is great too. Get the philly cheesesteak w/ potato salad for a side!

I almost forgot about this gem....

Rick not liking this place says A LOT. He also invented the cowboy diet as follows: nothing but apples, slim jims, and gatoraide. It is not recommended.

I had a feeling either you or iheartbu would pull that up. One of my favorite Ducat columns. Before anyone thinks otherwise, I'm not him even though I don't like Velvet Freeze, too.

Do any of you alumni remember a place called Taco Gringo? They had something called a "sancho" that I think was pretty good. (I ate enough of them I should remember!) My buddy's brother worked in there. A bunch of us would go in there for a late night feast...order about 30 bucks worth of food and he would charge us about $2.70! Those were the days....

Taco Gringo - man I forgot about that place - wasn't it on Bradley over near St. Marks? Not sure what's in that building now. I downed a few Sanchos in there myself, but I had to pay full price.

I was only kidding. It disgusted me when I saw the cop say it on the show Cops. I think I actually spat at the TV. I used to work til 2am, 3am, 4am, or 5am and have to be part of the 'criminals' on the road at those hours.

I had a friend that worked at the Lucky Lady back in the 80's who said all the beer on tap was Natural Light except for Lowenbrau.

Wow reading about this sure brought about a bunch of memories. The last time i heard from my sister that lives in Bloomington was that the Lucky Lady had burned down, so is it now a underage club, "not that it wasn't before".

I remember trips on hungover days to Mr. G's on main, at least i think that was the place. great greasy food!

Avantis is a cult following for sure, although from what i have heard it is even bigger at ISU.

I second the Garners, not sure why but i have a lot of good times associated with that place.

There also used to be a chinese place in campus town that was actually pretty decent that had copies of checks on the wall from people they would not accept from anymore.

I am sure a lot of the younger readers will say Jimmy Johns is now a must visit as well. I remember a bunch of us alums going there after an alumni weekend about 4 years ago.

But to me the #1 place for me to go to when i return is JIMMY'S. The best drinks in town and the best bloody mary's for the next day.
