  • Another area coach- BJ McCullum - considered for a new job

I came across another great rumor involving a well know area coach. BJ McCullum, the very successful coach at Lincoln College (Div II juco), is reported to be one of 3 finalists for the vacant coaching position at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas. They are a Div I juco, and a member of the Jayhawk Conference, probably the top juco conference in the nation. The rumor is that McCullum, College of Eastern Utah (successful Div I juco) coach Bryan Zollinger, and Kansas Wesleyan (very successful NAIA Div II program) coach Tommy DeSalme are the 3 finalists. I can't find any report of this published anywhere, but the source is a former Jayhawk Conference coach, and pretty reliable.

    McCullum's bio--

The latest report out of Seward County CC is that the final decision between the 3 finalists for the head coaching job will be announced Friday afternoon. The other 2 have closer connections with Kansas and Seward. Zollinger is apparently from Kansas and played at Seward and was an assistant there in 1995. DeSalme has coached at NAIA schools in Kansas for the past 6 years. I am not aware of any connections McCullum has to Kansas or Seward, so it's a credit to his success that he is one of the 3 finalists.
    Good luck BJ!

The decision of who Seward CC selects for their new head coach is scheduled to be announced tomorrow. But I have learned that BJ McCullum is headed to Kansas. It is said that he already interviewed and was among the 3 finalists, so the fact he is headed to Kansas could be a sign he will be named head coach. If not, I don't see what he's going there for. Should know tomorrow afternoon.

The decision on the new coach at Seward County CC was announced yesterday.
Bryan Zollinger was named the new head coach at Seward. He was previously the head coach at College of Eastern Utah in Price, Utah , where he coached the Golden Eagles men???‚¬?„?s basketball program the past 10 seasons (1997-2007).

BJ McCullum was one of the 3 finalists, but didn't get the job.

Article about BJ McCullum in Liberal, Kansas to interview for the job at Seward CC.
BJ McCullum, who became a nationally recognized coach at Canton, Spoon River, then and Lincoln College & Blackhawk east...
had to step down a couple years ago after a debilitating stroke...but has now recovered and will be back hopefully as an assistant at Blackhawk East..
He will also act as AD..

As many recall, McCullum built Lincoln College into a national powerhouse, then when he turned the reigns over to his assistant Kirk Whiteman - they proceeded to win two National titles plus a 3rd place finish..
                ...good luck Coach Mac

Local lore says that at one point, Coach McCullum had Nick Van Exel on campus and almost signed him at Spoon River. He really built SRC into a great program which spring boarded him to huge success at Lincoln.
