  • NCAA Certifies a New Sport - Rez Ball

This is no joke, the NCAA has certified Rez Ball, a Native American game that is a variation of basketball.

Here is the definition given as to what is rez ball:

"But what exactly is rez ball?

???‚¬?“Organized chaos,???‚¬?? says Mabry, ???‚¬?“much more physical than organized ball.???‚¬?? Exact definitions differ but most agree that it???‚¬?„?s a run-and-gun, fast-breaking endeavor full of showboating and no-look passes.

Rob McDonald, the spokesperson for the Salish Kootenai tribe and a longtime rez ball fan says, ???‚¬?“Indian ball is its own kind of ball.???‚¬??

He explains that there is a rare connection between players in rez ball. With fewer players, fewer time-outs, no organized plays, he likens it to jazz musicians who compliment each other. He insists there is a pureness and excitement in rez ball that exemplifies native traditional and family ways."

    More on Rez Ball

It is very popular in Arizona.

"In Arizona, 3 of the top six largest crowds at a boys basketball game are rezball games (regardless of school size), with the second highest ever being a game between an Apache powerhouse and a Navajo powerhouse. (over 16,000)

Also the top three largest crowds for a girl's game were reservation teams. (10,000-16,000)"

Personally, I just can't see BU forming a rez ball team soon, but who knows.

Oh, come on, this sport just SCREAMS Illini-Braves matchups. Would we be allowed to bring Brad E. Lee or Tommy Hawk, and could the Illini bring back the chief, all under the guise of "star athletes"?

I think the NCAA should certify 3-on-3, Gus Macker-style basketball as an official NCAA sport, since some smaller schools might have trouble finding enough to fill a roster for 5-man basketball.

Hey if snowboarding and synchronized swimming qualify as Olympic sports---

We need football or scholarship ncaa d 1 hockey before this sport.

Next on the NCAA certification agenda:

          1. Tetherball
          2. Extreme Hopscotch
          3. Co-ED Freeze Tag

          In that order.

I'd really also like to add dodgeball. Dodgeball would be fabulous.

Don't you know, dodgeball is as politically incorrect as Don Imus.

you must be joking, on TV it is virtually a snooze fest.. it is a very demanding and tough sport to play from my days of playing pickup games during the winter. live it is ok, but on tv, its about the same as NASCAR for me, unwatchable.
