This is a victory for the Valley. Imagine that, Dana giving up a job at an SEC school to stay at Creighton. Wow, my respect for the guy has doubled over the already high opinion I had of him. Good news, Lowery stays at SIU, Dana stays at Creighton.

Gives me hope to when Coach Les may be facing a similar kind of decision in the future. I hope the elite Valley coaches remain here, so the coaching positions in the Valley won't be considered just stepping-stones to a BCS job.

I agree that this is a great victory for the Valley! I too have respect for Dana. Yes I know there are a lot of people, especially on other boards giving the guy a lot of flack for changing his mind like that, but that happens. It would have been nice if the family issues were worked out before he announced he would leave for Arkansas, but I think people are entitled to a change of heart.

If he ever decided to leave for another job (which I don't think will happen because of his decision to stay with Creighton), I don't think this one waffle will damage his reputation that much. But as has been said, Altman would not turn down a job at a school with the basketball prestige like Arkansas has without knowing that he would most likely will stay for the remainder of his career at Creighton. In other words, no one should worry about how he handled this whole episode as long as he and his family are ultimately happy with his decision to stay.

Here is the story from espn.com: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2824653

Also, on espn's video media player thing there is a story regarding Dana and a clip of him speaking as to why he is going back to CU.

Is Dana Altman now considered the longest tenured coach in the MVC? The way I see it, since he left and returned, his tenure reverts back to zero!

That makes Barry Hinson the "Dean of MVC coaches".

I'm actually ok with Dana coming back 'cause we're gonna heckle the hell outta him next year for this.

Since he didn't technically miss coaching any of the games (or any part of a season for that matter), I would still consider him the "Dean of MVC coaches".

But Barry could at least live with the fact that he was the "Dean" for a day!

Dana is still the dean. What if he took a leave of absence? He miss any games or practices, he had a moment of indecision and came back to where his heart was. This happens with married couples from time to time, but they don't declare their marriage 'over', just a rocky time that they overcame. I see this as Dana having a moment of doubt, and coming to the RIGHT decision.

Great day for the MVC - the top 5 coaches remain intact, keeping the league strong as ever. Next year may be a slightly 'down' year, but with our top coaches returning, it won't last long. Power conferences retain their top coaches...we are a power conference! The proof is in the pudding!

These articles suggest he was hired as the Arkansas coach for 1 day, then quit to return to Creighton to resume the job there.

I guess we can't call him Boss Hog afterall.
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

then that technically means he is a new hire at creighton and that makes Jim Les the 3rd most senior coach in the Valley behind Hinson and Turgeon.

                              Let's see ... what was it, 1.5 mil? 1.5 mil/ 365 = $4100.
I'm sure Dana will be expecting a check.

I guess I ask what the definition of 'The Dean' is. Is it longest overall time spent as a head coach in the league, or longest consecutive time spent as a head coach in the league? I guess I view it as more the former than the latter. For example, if someone is a captain in the military and leaves the service for a few years, then returns, they don't start over again at private. Same thing in just about any business - especially if they're only gone for 1 day.

And to address another item that has been harped moreso on the 'other' board than here, but that is the question of professionalism. IMO, from what I have heard, Dana did not do anything unprofessional in having a change of heart. Now, obviously I don't know all of the details, but as long as it was handled respectfully, and in an honest, face-to-face manner, there was no wrongdoing. If anything, Arkansas perhaps may have rushed a bit in making the announcement and holding the press conference. I have friends and colleagues in several lines of work who have accepted jobs and then had second thoughts. What would have been less professional would have been for Dana to take the job, and in a month come to this conclusion. In a business where coaches can lose their jobs at the drop of a hat, I don't think there's anything wrong with the way Dana went about things the past couple of days.
