  • Valley poised for fall? But good for BU!

I'm sorry to say, but it just seems like Altman leaving is a really bad sign for the Valley. With so many new coaches, you'd imagine (not even looking at returning players) the league cannot possibly be as strong as the past couple years.

Honestly, I think the committee's spit in the face of the Valley (and other smaller conferences) dealt a colossal blow in more than just NCAA seeds. No, I don't know more about Dana Altman than anyone else on here, but I think it is reasonable to think he has to be getting a little fet up with all these 20-win season and getting LOUSY seeds (9-11 range) in the NCAA tournament.

There is a trickle down effect on the lack of respect and it is going to hurt everyone in the Valley.

BUT ... here's the good news: Bradley's fan-support continues to surge. We have new facilities being built on campus. We have a great coach who is loyal his alma-mater. More great recruits are coming.

THIS IS OUR CHANCE BRADLEY FANS! Time to take over the Valley. WE can do what Creighton has done. Let the media bash our conference again and again but let's get to the point where they are saying, "Well, then there's Bradley again, coming off their 6th consecutive 20-win season, poised for another NCAA tourney bid!"

In what is a dark day for the Valley, I think this can be a great chance for the Braves.
    Go Braves!

I completely agree on what I bolded. As for the other part. When the Redbirds return to the Valley elite, I wanted it to be while the league was at its peak. I wouldn't want it by default. Altman leaving the Valley will sting for sure no matter if other teams benefit from CU falling a bit.

That's not how I want success.

IMO, BU was poised for this run regardless of whether or not Altman stayed. It just hurts the league as a whole that he's gone.

Yes it indeed hurts big-time. Dana was a great ambassador for the Valley.

Did Creighton really deserve a much higher seed this year? That loss at home during the Bracket Buster to Drexel didn't look too good. Their non conference work wasn't impressive this year, with only a home victory against Xavier as anything to brag about. They lost to both ISUs in the league this year. Creighton was seeded at the same level as the U of I which seemed just about right to me.

Creighton fans should see this as the dawning of a new era. Surely this is a very attractive job for lots of stellar candidates.

            Randy - Huh???

Being the 2nd place team in the 6th best RPI conference means something. Creighton didn't have a great non-conference resume, but their resume in league was very solid. And for BCS teams, loading up on cupcakes in the non-conference and coming in 2nd in a Top 6 conference usually leads to a Top 5 seed. Creighton should have been a 6 or a 7 in my opinion. Getting a 10 seed, and having to play another strong mid-major team in 7 seed Nevada was a snub.

Maybe, but if they had beaten Nevada the 'snub' argument would be stronger. Hey, I'm on your side though, in general the Selection Committee did a rotten job and showed no respect for the smaller programs.

Maybe not the dawning of a new era, reports are that the Creigton AD is also leaving

After what happened to the league this season as far as ncaa bids I believe it is time to take care of our own business and start winning the league and the tour. and not worry so much about what the other teams are doing.

Although truely unfair in terms of "blind resume'" The Valley really shot itsef in the foot this year. WSU was leading the Valley in for a while, and had actual respect among the talking heads, then WSU bean it's slide (so the whole MVC must be bad..)
Next the Valley had a terrible showing in the BB which gave enough ammo to anyone wanting to put the MVC at the same level as any other "mid-major"

Although none of those arguments make actual sense, they did greatly hurt perception and that alone was enough for the "snuff". Really what other conference friends does the MVC have? They are taking away from the BCS leagues, and until the BB were outclassing the other leagues. The BB was enough ammo for the lesser leagues to say you're (MVC) no better than us. and the BCS leagues gladly went along with it..

sad, but probably true. Unfortunately, often times perception > reality

Agree with everything said here. Despite the shafting on Selection Sunday, it's hard to argue against the MVC shooting itself in the foot on a national stage BB Saturday.

Look at the teams that the Valley played in the BracketBusters:

Butler -- NCAA, made Sweet 16
Winthrop -- NCAA, beat Notre Dame
                        VCU -- NCAA, beat Duke
                        Nevada -- NCAA, beat Creighton
                        Drexel -- NIT
Miami (OH) -- NCAA, lost by 2 to Oregon
                        Appalachian St. -- NIT
                        Wisconsin-Milwaukee
                        Ball St.
                        Samford

That turned out to be a pretty good lineup, wouldn't you say? But most people didn't know it at the time, because these teams were in the process of making a name for themselves.

The Valley's BB showing was disappointing, but far from terrible. The MVC just didn't get the credit it deserved for playing these teams.... which is why it needs to pull out of this event....
                        BRADLEY BASKETBALL
                        -2 NCAA Title Games
                        -3 NCAA Elite Eights
                        -4 NCAA Sweet 16s
                        -4 NIT Championships

Totally agree. That's not how I would want to win either. While I think Bradley would still be competing for the conference championship next year without Altman leaving, I would have liked more chances to beat Creighton at Omaha with Altman at the helm.

I'm glad Lowrey is staying, so we get another shot at him the Salukis on their homecourt. I'd like a win there too.

Some of you are making it sound like the Valley is all of a sudden the SWAC. If we manage to win the Valley next year, it'll be a tremendous and DESERVED accomplishment, it won't be because Moser, Altman, and Waltman are gone.

Coaches come and go like players. I, personally, shed no tear for CU or the Valley. Conference leaders in basketball are cyclical.
SOME would like you to think SIU and CU have always been on top. CU is a solid program with a National rep. They might slip a bit but they will rebound real quick IMO.

As fine a coach as Altman is there is another out there waiting to show what he can do.

I say good for Altman. He's getting to do what he wants to do.
