  • Fired LSU coach get's $70,000 bonus for job well done

Pokey Chatman was fired earlier this month when reports surfaced that she had and affair with her player. But based on her contract with her former employer LSU, she is due a $70,000 bonus as LSU advanced to the Final Four in NCAA women's play last night. The assistant coach who is now coaching and running the team, Bob Starkey, apparently doesn't get any bonus for his job of coaching LSU into the Final Four.--

More bad news for women's basketball--
Attendance figures Monday night: The arena in Fresno has a capacity of more than 15,000, but the LSU-Connecticut game drew just 3,046 fans.
    (3) LSU beat (1) UConn 73-50 last night in Fresno--

The other regional final last night at Greensboro, NC did slightly better and drew 6,082 fans. (4) Rutgers advanced to the Final Four with a win over (3) Arizona State 64-45.

2 more regionals are set for tonight--
In Dallas- (2) Purdue vs. (1) North Carolina

In Dayton- (7) Mississippi vs (1) Tennessee

I do not understand why a business would continue to honor a contract post a resignation. Chatman quit shouldnt her contact been terminated immediately? BTW does anyone think she will ever find another coaching opportunity? Maybe at Penn State

Anyway, to bad the attendance was so poor but the womans game, even with it being, in a few words being pushed down our throats, simply is not a popular spectator sport in many areas of the country. And why would anyone put any sort of womans tournament in Fresno California?

I would be very interested to see what the rating numbers were for ESPN for the rounds of this tourney they are showing.

I guess having an affair with one of her student athletes didn't violate any provisions of her contract.

One of the biggest obstacles to women's basketball becoming more widely popular is the trend for all the best players to congregate to the same dozen or so schools that fill the top 10 every year, and from which the NCAA champion always comes.
The talent pool of top women basketballers is nowhere as deep as it is for men, so I don't see other schools moving into that elite group soon. And I don't see any way to limit the choice of the top athletes, even though the 2nd and 3rd string players at Tennessee, Maryland, and UConn would probably also make the Sweet 16 every year.

Correct, there are maybe 5 really good teams and 300 mediocre to really bad teams.

Do they still use the undersized basketball?

I believe they still use the smaller ball.

There is a little variation on schools with ASU, Ole Miss and Rutgers but overall you still have your Uconns, Tenns, UNC in the elite 8.

I like womans basketball but competitiveness overall is so lacking and it will be years before there is any equality in the sport.

Here are the attendances figures for the 2 regional finals last night. Tennessee has a very large fan base, so no surprise that their regional drew the highest. But overall, very disappointing attendance figures. We'll see how the Final Four does Sunday at the Quicken Loans Arena (Cleveland, OH):

              (1) North Carolina 84 - (2) Purdue 72 at Dallas Reunion Arena
              attendance 3,311

              (1) Tennessee 98 (7) Mississippi 62 at University of Dayton Arena
              attendance 8,205
