  • Coaching Rumors

This one is an early rumor:
Minnesota wants to get a new head coach named and get off and running with recruiting.
They have definitely decided to grab one of the top candidates and pay what it takes, so Jim Molinari will likely be out of a job.
Lon Kruger is still a possibility, but one new name that is circulating, is, surprisingly, Tubby Smith, who might be lured away from Kentucky and their endlessly dissatisfied fan base.

The other rumor is now bordering on fact, and that's Steve Alford has now called a 5PM meeting at the athletic dept. at Iowa, all players and coaches to attend.
Alford has yet to meet with the Iowa AD, so there's officially no word on his plans, but it is presumed that this afternoon's meeting is to announce his plans to the players first and the AD, then word will be given to the press.
Likely Alford is announcing he is gone.

Minnesota will name Kentucky's Tubby Smith as its next head coach, SI.com's Seth Davis has learned....
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

That shocks and suprises me. Bad news for the Illini, who are spiraling downward while their competition and usual victims in Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan, look to be upgrading. Bruce had better come up with some answers (and players) very soon.

        ....
I guess a base of $1.8 millions plus incentives acn do some luring.

I think that's a little more than Molinari was making.

I'd be really, really nervous if I were an Illinois fan.

Minnesota will surpass Illinois within 2-3 years at most. This will up the ante for Michigan and Iowa as well. Illinois and specifically Weber are in big trouble.
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

Illini fans who don't have their heads buried in the sand know this. They can pad the non-conference schedule all they want, it's a downward spiral to the lower division of the Big 10 unless something is done in Champaign.

So Conference USA >> to >> Big West is a good move?
This is insane, the Big West has only one team better than RPI 140, and that's #79 Long Beach State who fired their coach.
Six of the 8 teams in the conference had nonconference SOS at or around 300!
They draw only 2000 per home game, barely half of what Eustachy presently draws at southern Miss.
But I guess Larry is a LBSU grad and wants to get back to the West Coast and party.

Hey Larry--- you never returned that phone call that you promised you make!!
And don't forget the e mails!

At Iowa, there's a lot of gress roots sentiment to go after Bruce Pearl and try to lure him back to coach at Iowa.
Iowa has several Top 100 recruits coming in and they want to get a coach in place and try to keep those recruits from going elsewhere.
(Matt Gatens, Dairese Gary, Jarryd Cole, Jake Kelley, Beas Hamga)

This report quotes John Calipari as saying he has no interest in the Kentucky job.

I see where Larry Eustachy is now pressuring Southern Miss to give him a raise and contract extension and they somewhat feel compelled in order to keep him with all the other head coaching spots open.
Nice work, Larry, you really do know how play your cards.

By the way, Larry, I have never gotten that phone call you promised!!

I've been following all the coaching changes, and wonder,
is Chris Lowery going to end up as a bridesmaid again?
Last year he was a hot young coaching candidate and didn't get much serious consideration for any of the 60 coaching spots that were filled.
Now this year with 40 more head coaching spots being filled, has he gone for interviews?
There are only a couple spots left open that wouldn't be a step down, so is he going to move up somewhere?
