  • Dr. Tom retires

Tom Davis is retiring.....press conference at 3pm today at Drake. Interesting thing......Dr Tom won't be there, but Keno will be.

Looks like hoops guru was right again. He appears to have predicted the Porter Moser firing and the Davis retierment. The only one left in his prediction is the Chris Lowery move.

The timing of it surprises me some....we're getting very close (3 weeks) to the spring signing period starting. However, the coaching staff has been very up front with recruits that there's no guarantee Dr Tom will be their coach.

I hope it doesn't affect the spring recruiting....or maybe it means they've already got a couple of guys commited, so there's no harm in making the announcement now.

It will be very interesting to see who Keno hires to fill the vacancy created by him moving up to the top spot. My personal hope is that he brings in a juco coach who just happens to have a couple of unsigned studs on his team.

It's a shame to see Dr. Tom go, I think he was doing good things at Drake. Hope the new guy does the program well!!

Well, the new guy will be his son, Keno. He's had about 15 years as an assistant, but this will be his first head coaching job. I'm not concerned with how well he knows his X's and O's, but it's a big change going from assistant to head honcho....I hope he's ready for it.

I got the impression it was his son by the conversation here, but wasn't sure. Hopefully he can get off to a good start and make DU pretty competitive.

Does young Keno have a PHD yet? I want to call him "Dr. Keno".

                  Des Moines headline probably reads
                  Drake Gambles on Keno

                    That's good stuff!

It is an unusual name. In all my travels I have never met a person named "Keno".

I don't have the kind of respect for many coaches that I have for Tom Davis.
Never a scandal, never a tirade, never a chair thrown across the floor, and he just did for Drake what nobody's done a couple decades, produce a winner.

He reached the epitome of his success at Boston College and Iowa.
I can still recall his methodical passing offense that got his final two Boston College teams to the NCAA with 23 and 22 wins in '81 and '82.

Guys like Dr. Tom don't get enough press, guys like Bob Knight, Bob Huggins, and Bill Self get way too much.
                        You will be missed.

I don't want to say that Dr. Tom is getting old, but here's a picture of his first team at Boston College in '00

(PS maybe we can start a "Things older than Dr. Tom" thread)

I heard that although he never got the credit he deserved, Dr. Tom a few years ago drew up
some rules for a new game and gave them to this guy who rewarded Dr. Tom by giving him this signed picture.

Think about this, though: Dr.Tom missed more time this year than at any other point in his career. One of the times he missed was to go to the funeral of his college coach. . .

How old did that guy have to be
