  • BU women's recruiting

A couple notes about BU women's hoops recruiting. This year's recruiting class looks very good, and could get better--

In an article in today's PJ Star, there is a mention of a player at Jefferson Community College that is leaning toward Bradley.

In the 6th paragraph is a mention of a player at Jefferson, sophomore Kandy Beemer, who is noted as a Bradley recruit. She averages 16.5 points per game and owns the top 3-point shooting percentage in NJCAA Division I at 51.5%.

    The other recruits--
    Class of 2007--
Caitlin Deeken-- high-scoring guard/forward from California, Missouri, was named to 1st team All-Conference, and to their All-Tournament team--

Raisa Taylor-- of Decatur Eisenhower, was named the Player of the Year in her conference, the Big 12. She was also 1st team Class AA All-State 1st team.--

Sonya Harris-- 5'10" guard/forward from Thornton high school. She was named to the All-Area (Chicago south suburban area) team. She averaged 15 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and five blocked shots for a 22-5 Thornton team.--

And 1 class of 2008 recruit--
Michelle Lund-- she is a 5'7" high scoring junior at Bishop Heelan high school in Sioux City, Iowa. She is setting all kinds of scoring records there, and is on track to become one of the highest scoring players in Iowa high school history.. She was named to the 1st team, All-State team, and also to the 1st team All-Conference--

This may be the best overall incoming class that Paula has had.. we will see what develops...
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

That may be true, but she loses Jen Brown, Ashley Chelleen, Erika Nelson, and Amy Peters. That's a lot of minutes, 111 per game. The only returnees with significant minutes are seniors to be Devyn Flanagan at 31 min per game, Kelly Krumwiede at 22 minutes per game, and to a lesser degree Rachel Merriman at 16 minutes per game. No one else comes close to averaging double digit minutes per game.

Edit: My bad, Kelly will be a sophomore.

Tell me about it! I worked on the post-season banquet video and these 4 graduating are all over the BU record books.. Krumwiede and Devyn are a good start and with Rachel, you may already have 3 parts in place... we will see

Mike, I agree that these are huge losses, and I loved the play of every one of the ladies leaving. They are terriffic people and a credit to Bradley, and we'll miss their talent, intelligence, and beauty. But the facts remain that they never could rise above the middle of the MVC. I don't know what the problem was, since they appeared to me to be quite a talented bunch. And, other than the SMS teams with Jackie Stiles, the MVC has not been that great in women's hoops. So, since you saw a lot more games than I was able to see, what do you think was the problem?

I am excited to see the kind of talent Paula is bringing in this year and next. Let's hope it leads to an even more successful era of Bradley women's basketball.

I saw all but about two home games. Tough to figure out as I thought they had the talent to do better. But all that is history now. But it remains to be seen if Paula can elevate BU into a contender.

I am sorry, but after 7 years of 127-152 overall and 79-106 in the MVC, Buscher has no business being the head coach of the Womans team at Bradley University. She has proven one thing, she is incapable of winning basketball games at the Division 1 level.

I do not care who she has recruited, and she has supposedly had other "great" classes yet continues to lose consistantly.

Bradley should have fired her immediately following the 3rd straight lose to ISU in the Valley tourney.

I can think of no reason she still is the head coach, other then Bradley its administration and athletics department have no interest in a successful Womans basketball program.

I can't see anything wrong with your logic, and if this had been the record for a men's coach, they would have been let go by now. But I would like to see what happens with the incoming class, and I think Ken K. feels that way.

No doubt the women's team is handled a little differently, since win or lose they do not generate any significant revenue like the men's team does.

I went to several women's game this year... My observations are that I think our players are less athletic and/or in worse shape than a lot of the teams we play in that they don't often seem as quick and a lot of the time look gassed out to me... which could reflect on the coaching.

Regarding the way the team plays... Sometimes their defense is pretty good but their offense generally seems pretty disorganized. They have trouble creating opportunities inside or out and depend on a lot on some of the good shooters to make a tough shot. Spacing seems bad to me also, which may be a reason that they have trouble creating a lot of scoring opportunities.

I have said the samething about the baseball program and its head coach for several years. His overall record yes is 784-723-4 8-8 this season, but the program in the past several years has not come close to improving in the Valley and is consistanly at the bottom of the conference.

I understand the man has been at BU for 28yrs and is high ranking within the Athletics department but he is 60 years old and the program seems to be very stagnet, but then again it has been stagnet for a long time.

Other have said about Kalmer when he is brought up that the school will never fire him and he will go out on his own terms. Also that baseball is not a money making sport and that BU because it is in the north can not compete.

I do not agree with any of this, BU plays in a beautiful ball park, other universities in the north have been competitive... Michigan, Notre Dame, UIC, Illinois, Creighton. To me it is wanting to have a competitive baseball program, meaning winning baseball games in the conference and not being afraid to compete with WSU, Eville and Mo State. It wasnt that long ago that Eville was poor and now they are top 25. David Seifert
is a young coach who is bring high quality talent to Evansville. If the Aces can be successful so can BU, but like the Wbasketball program its a commitment from everyone to want to win and BU proves year in and year out they have no interest in putting winning programs out in either sport, this is proved by keeping on keeping on with the Head coaches in each sport.
