The former Colorado coach replaces Rob Judson, who was fired earlier this month after his team finished the season with a 7-23 record.
His final season, which began with his announcement that he wouldn't return next year, was his worst. Colorado finished last in the Big 12 for the first time with a 7-20 record and only three conference wins.
The Buffaloes lost to Texas Tech in the opening round of the Big 12 tournament.
The 48-year-old Patton finished his 11-year tenure at Colorado with a 184-160 record, the second-winningest coach in school history.

I don't pretend to know what's best for NIU, but I was wondering the same.
Patton's Colorado team underachieved greatly this year. He was quick to repeatedly blame his players for the team's failures. He went so far as to imply his team "quit" on him only to be followed by some of his players accusing the coach of being the one who quit on the team. Patton had announced beforte the season that he would step down when this season was over, and that he just didn't have the desire he once had.

With all the qualified candidates available, why wouldn't NIU go after someone who didn't quit on his last team and then blame the players?
