There are currently 336 Division I schools playing basketball, but that number will change again next year.
Here are the upcoming changes.
USC-Upstate (University of South Carolina-Upstate) will fully transition and be D-I in 2007-2008.
They will join and become the 12th member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
They have been D-II since 1990, and NAIA before that.
Florida Gulf Coast will also become fully certified as D-I after transitioning from D-II.
They are the 11th member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Presbyterian College of Clinton, SC has completed their transition and will be fully D-I in fall of 2007, having transitioned from D-II.
They will compete in the Big South Conference, becoming the 9th member.
North Carolina Central is in the process of transitioning to D-I and will join the MEAC.
Next year will be their first season as fully D-I as they follow fellow North Carolina school, Winston-Salem State in D-I
California State - Bakersfield has completed its first year competing as provisional D-I and will fully transition to D-I from D-II in 2009-2010.
Birmingham Southern has fully transitioned FROM D-I to D-III.
They did not compete in 2006-2007 as D-I and will no longer schedule D-I opponents.
The following three schools will begin the transition period to D-I in 2007-2008:

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
They will be eligible within 4-6 years to fully compete in D-I
