Looks like the 12 seed Illinois could upset the 5 seed Virginia Tech. 47-35 with 8 min left. This one didn't make a lot of sense. A #5 was too high for VT and #12 was too low for ILL.--

Not only did Illinois miss key shots and free throws down the stretch, they generally freaked out when Tech put on that press. They had about half a dozen possessions where they threw the ball away or lost it out of bounds and consequently had no shots at the basket. I suspect their message boards are going haywire about now."The NCAA is so upset about alleged recruiting violations at Kentucky that they decided to give Cleveland State the Death Penalty"--Jerry Tarkanian

PJ Star Sports Editor Bill Liesse really unloads on Illinois and on Bruce Weber this morning.

This seems like an almost gratuitous "piling on" article, coming the morning after Illinois is eliminated from the NCAA.
But what I find even stranger is that I have read and heard many people criticize Weber for his failure to recruit or sign a few of the recent stars from Chicago area like Derrick Rose, Sherron Collins, Jon Scheyer, and Julian Wright (the list is not as long as some might suggest). But I have never heard much criticism about the 2 kids Bill Liesse seems to fault Weber for.
Patrick Beverley was a major academic problem, and refused to show Illinois his transcript, something most major schools expect a kid to do. I don't blame BW a bit for turning his recruiting interest elsewhere after that. In fact, so did nearly every other major school that was recruiting Beverley. Only Arkansas, which happened to have an extra scholarship late, was around when Beverley finally surprised everyone and qualified.
And Osiris Eldridge! There was a reason Illinois nor any other major school was ever seriously interested in him. He was never more than a 3-star recruit, and aparently no other school higher than Illinois State or Bradley offered the kid a scholarship.
So people may have a reason to criticize some of BW's recruiting, but the cases made by Bill Liesse are pretty weak, and appear to be a major case of second guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking.
