First of all, thank for the hospitality of being able to post here. I saw an earlier scouting report on our team from MSU2007 or someone with a screen name similar. Thought I would add to the discussion with some comments about our team.
PG: Jamont Gordon is the "straw" that stirs the drink for this team. There is no one like him in college basketball. One college basketball sportswriter said "I have seen the next Dwayne Wade, and it is Jamont Gordon." That was after we humiliated the University of Miami in Coral Gables by 20 points. He is a 6-4 225 point sophomore guard. His best game of the year was in our win against Vanderbilt, when he scored 15 points, had 12 rebounds, and 11 assists. He has been averaging about 3:1 in assist to turnover the last 10 games. His free throws and 3pt shot has really improved.
SG: Reginald Delk starts at the off guard and averages about 9.4 ppg. He is a streaky 3 pt shooter. He will be either on or off. He starts because he is a very long, quick defender. He is about 6-4 175 and a sophomore. He makes very few mistakes. He has had both 28 point and 1 point games. He has had 8-9 3pt games and 0-5.
WF: Richard Delk is the starting small forward. Richard is our best perimeter defender. He is also an excellent 3 pt shooter, but focuses on defense. There will also be a few times he plays the point, which he played last year. We find mismatches with Gordon, by letting others run the point. Both Delk twins have very long arms, and play like they are 6-6 or more, but for some reason, they have problems with FT's. Richard is a half inch taller than Reginald and about 5 pounds heavier.
C: Charles Rhodes. Charles is playing the 5 spot, and that is not his "natural position." He is a 3 in the NBA. He is a 4 in college. He is very physical, has excellent "hops," and very quick post moves. He gets most of his baskets in dunks. He is a very good defensive player in man, but sometimes is out of position in zone. He is legitimately 6-8 240 and a junior. He feeds off the crowd. We should have about 8,000 there tomorrow, since students are starting to come back from break this weekend, and alumni who live in Jackson can come up for the game.
PF: Dietric Slater. He is listed at 6-3 200, but I doubt he is that tall. He is a blue collar warrior on the floor. He is the consummate garbage player. He is playing with a sprained wrist, bruises, and muscle pulls. He plays through the pain. There are some plays he is involved in that defy imagination. He flys through the air without any concern for his body, contorted in wierd positions.
Coming off the bench, usually at first TV timeout:
PG/SG Ben Hansbrough. 6-3 200 Fr. Ben is a true freshman and the younger brother of Tyler. He has a 3pt percentage about 50%. He also is an 80% FT shooter. He is similar to Dietric in effort. He is not a great athlete, but has quick hands, and makes good decisions on the floor. Plays the 2 and the 1 to relieve Gordon.
SG/SF: Barry Stewart, 6-3 170 Fr., is always calm, never panics, and makes great decisions. He was about 6-2 165 when the season started, but is still growing. He has a picture perfect jump shot, and makes about 40% of them. Can be on and off. He was averaging 13 ppg, then went through about 5 games where his shot was off. It seems to have come back.
C/F: Jarvis Varnado, 6-9 195 Fr. When you see him, the length of his arms will shock you. He is 6-9, but plays 7-0. Despite being thin, he is strong. Leads the team in blocked shots. Changes shots in the lane. Has a better offensive game, than most think.
C/F: Vernon Goodridge, 6-9 225 So. Goodridge is an enigma. He may be our best athlete, but hasn't mastered the mental parts of the game. I added him, because he is a good defender, our best rebounder, and actually started about 5 games. Back 7-8 games ago, he started riding the pine.
We are an inside/outside team. Your team seems to be primarily an outside team. We are the SEC's #1 3pt defending team. We allow about 21%. We play pressure man defense, and will pressure you to 25 feet. Our wings have long arms, and we are excellent at cutting down passing lanes. Our losses have all been against teams who could beat us inside. Stansbury has the habit of getting up by 20, then slowing the game down by going to a match-up 2-3 zone. There have been wins where were were up by almost 30, then almost letting teams back in by zoning.
We beat Vanderbilt like a drum at home, were up by 27 with 5 minutes to go, also beat Arkansas by 24 at home, came within the last shot to beating Florida at home, beat Kentucky in the SEC Tournament, and came very close on the road with Tennessee and Kentucky. We have 5 wins against NCAA Tournament teams. If it is close, you have a very legitimate chance to win this game. If it isn't, it could be embarrasing. We have been close to unbeatable at home the last half of the season.
