  • BU Expansion gets the go ahead

City Council voted near unanimously (10-1) to grant Bradley approval to proceed with expansion.

Even the representative of the area involved voted in favor.

"Second District Councilwoman Barbara Van Auken, who represents this area, praised both the school and its surrounding neighborhoods for trying to work together."

The plans really do look amazing, I think it will be great for the school, in just about every aspect. I talk to 1000's upon 1000's of alum and I have yet to hear a negative thing about it, though I am sure there are some. What I have noticed is that people that are particularly disappointed about something usually aren't huge supporters of Bradley as whole. Let's just hope we get the funds to make it happen!

Considering how much opposition was voiced by some on the Peoria Journal Star staff, there were
no people there last night in City Council chambers to voice any objection.
Only one resident speaker, Maplewood Avenue resident Kathleen Dusenbery spoke and said
"I don???‚¬?„?t want to see the neighborhood become a ghetto around Bradley???‚¬??
I doubt anyone wants that, especially Bradley University.
In case nobody has noticed what Bradley has done to the east of the campus where they indeed
took over a ghetto and turned it into a fine area for recreation and apartment living.
Bradley has done more to improve those neighborhoods, than the very residents themselves in some areas.

Let me guess....Sanberg the lone Nay vote.

I think she means that Bradley is taking over the nicest neighborhood surrounding the campus, which is what I'm thinking too. However it was the only logical place to expand.

I would contend that just North of Bradley's Campus, and east of Laura Bradley park is a very nice area and would probably be considered MUCH nicer than the elmwood drive area...

No-- the story reports that Chuck Grayeb was the only nay vote, but aren't there 12 members of the city council?
              Someone must have not voted.

I sit right behind Gary Sandberg and he is really a BIG BU fan, and he would support anything that helps Bradley become a better school and develop into a better ball team!

I'm really looking forward to the new additions to Bradley, especially the new rec center. I'm an alum currently living in Florida, but I get chances to re-visit Peoria every now and then.

It'll be cool to see these changes happen over the next few years for Bradley, and actually, Peoria overall.
