  • Chris Lowry

I went back and listened to the radio archive of last Saturday's SIU game. There were multiple references by Snell and I think maybe even Diorio about Christ Lowry: This being his last year at SIU, him being ready to cash a big check, etc.

I wouldn't think too much about it, but Lowry himself was on 670 The Score yesterday. Mike Mulligan asked (paraphrase): "But you're a Saluki guy though, right? I mean you're not looking to use SIU as a stepping stone to something bigger..." Lowry flat out said that you have to pay for success and when opportunities present themselves, you have to weigh your options. That's a fairly loose paraphrase, but he kind of sounded good as gone to me. Maybe this is no secret? I hadn't heard much...

He has done really well at SIU, but I don't think I would go as far as to call him Christ. Between him and GodShaw, I don't know if anyone can beat them.
If you build it, the students will come.

I believe that Lowery is in negotiations (sp?) with SIU about his next contract. IMO what he is saying is SIU better pay up or I'm as good as gone. I am sure he would like to stay at SIU but he would not hesitate to hit the road for a better offer.

It would be nice if SIU and the rest of the Valley could pony up the $$$$$ and hold on to these good coaches. It makes the conference more stable and that much stronger.

Lowery has apparently made references in interviews saying that if the right opportunity came along, he'd take it.
I suspect most coaches at any level would take it if a better spot opened up and they came caling with an offer you couldn't refuse.

Coaches from smaller conferences going to a bigger spotlight is no different than a freshman or sophomore leaving school early to turn pro, whether it's to the NBA, Europe, Asia, or South America. It comes with the territory, I suppose. Then again, if nobody else in the world would change jobs to better their situation, things would be pretty stagnant!

Remember, Greg McDermott had several other schools interested in him when he was at Northern Iowa, and used that to get UNI to tear up his contract and give him a huge raise. After that was agreed upon, he took the Iowa State job anyway.
McDermott was a UNI alum, too. So I wouldn't be surprised if Lowery listens to offers, and maybe takes one. There will be many openings in the next few weeks, some very good ones.

With the salary grumblings I have read about down in C'dale coming from the academic side, it may get harder and harder to counter the offers Lowery is guaranteed to get. Seeing Web and Matt move on to successful careers elsewhere won't help keep him home either. Will SIU's style of play limit Lowery's opportunities, given the inevitable backlash against slow, ugly basketball? (thanks to the B10 )

Well we all know that Lowery has been grossly underpaid, but a Sweet Sixteen or beyond run really will serve as the leverage he needs for a new contract at SIU. He should be compensated very well after this season, but hopefully it will enough for him to stay at SIU

And yes, no one says a word when slow, ugly basketball is played during Big Ten games! Puhleeze! There's still more scoring in a "slow, ugly" basketball game than you would see in hockey or soccer game. And no, Valley basketball is not sending basketball back to the 1890's either!
