This entire program has been somewhat under a curse ever since they broke the rules by tampering with Danny Granger.
Sure they eked out a thin victory in their weak conference tourney for a bid to the NCAA in Granger's senior year, but they have been horrid and haven't even made the NIT otherwise.
And in that only NCAA appearance, they set records for how badly they played and how horribly they were beaten by Villanova, as they scored only 11 points in the 1st half.
Add to that the terrible recruiting, the player fights, disputes, and arrests, and more.
Now comes one of the most bizarre stories I have heard yet out of New Mexico.
Ex-Big Ten player, Aaron Johnson who got thrown off the Penn State team for fighting with his teammates, transferred to New Mexico for his final season, which has been horribly disappointing. Even before he played he had another incident of being arrested for fighting with police at a bar, but McKay let him back on the team.
The Lobos were so bad that they ended tied for last place in the Mountain West Conference, then they lost to the other team they tied with (TCU) in their post-season tourney's Play-in game, and are done for the year, and coach Ritchie McKay can pack up and leave now, since he's been fired.
But in that final game Aaron Johnson's parents had travelled 2000 miles to watch his final college game, and he didn't play much and he played poorly.
Never mind that at least he had the chance to play, the father was hot, and went after McKay.
Apparently the elder Mr. Johnson barged into the lockerroom after the game and confronted coach Ritchie McKay and began a shouting match. Howard's father needed to be restrained and escorted out by security.
Amazing.........
