Well, I guess going back nearly 30 years you found an example, but in having to go that far back, I think you have confirmed rather than refuted my premise, that in recent memory it has been quite rare.
Maybe an Idaho State or a Pepperdine have done it, but wake me when a Valley school considers it.

Dick by the way had spent some time as an assistant at the D-I level at both St. Louis and Michigan State.

I wonder if Rick Herdes from Southern Indiana might get any consideration for the Evansville job? He was coach of the year in GLVC.

Has anyone said Marty Simmons for the Evanville job down there?

I would imagine that Simmons would be a strong name for the Eville job. Herdes has a much stronger resume and would save them in moving costs since Southern Indiana is right there in Evansville.

Tornado, not to argue, but you challenged someone to name a coach who went from JC directly to Div1 and said you can't name one who did. I think the right guy could do it, but Dick was a great recruiter and his experience at St. Louis and Michigan St had to help.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

He might get some consideration, but recall when SIU-E came to play Bradley in the preseason,
they were picked #3 Nationally in the Preseason D-II rankings.
                  Only Winona State
and one other D-II school were picked to be any better.
                  ttp://www.siue.edu/ATHLETIC/MBB/20062007/1012.html

They then went on to BEAT D-I Nebraska, and played pretty well against Bradley - losing 74-58.

But then, they actually underperformed this season, going 15-12 overall and 10-9 in their conference.
In all likelihood, their disappointing record this year after being selected in the preseason
as one of the top 3 teams in the nation, will kill any chances of Marty Simmons jumping to the D-I ranks this year.
Marty's overall record at SIU-E is 88-59 (5 seasons) not exactly earthshattering.
In their conference, Southern Indiana's coach, Rick Herdes, was the Coach of the Year, not Marty.
Herdes' record at Southern Indiana over his six years there is 157-39!! (and they finished an undefeated 15-0 in the conference despite being picked in the preseason well behind SIU-E and despite an overhaul of their roster this season with six totally new players and two redshirt returnees.)

Look for someone to snatch up Herdes for a spot at the D-I level!

and ...COACHCORN, you are a basketball encyclopedia...and I appreciate your answers, and those of a few others like Dubl.

and yet I believe my premise is still intact.
You did indeed come up a some examples, but I still hold to the fact that in recent years, a guy jumping right straight from the juco ranks to the D-I ranks is indeed scarce.
I didn't know about all those guys that made the jump 20-30 years ago like Lute, Tark, Dick, etc....

Wright State head coach Brad Brownell certainly increased his stock with a tournament championship win over Butler.
Look for his name to come up in connection with some bigger coaching spots.
Same true for Oral Roberts head coach Scott Sutton.
Anyone from the MVC through the Big Ten and on up should be checking their bank accounts and calling these guys.

Brownell just completed his 1st season at Wright St. Do you think he'd want to move again after 1 year? I don't know if that's good to be known as a nomad so early in your coaching career. That's a reputation that you don't want and it screams of Kermit Davis.

Brownell would be smart to stay a couple years there in my opinion.
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

Let's see.......stay at Wright State or possibly go to a BCS for $500,000/yr....tough choice, but money talks.

I can't say what he'd do, but if a big school comes calling, they can be persuasive...

How long was Matta at Butler (one year) before he jumped at the chance to go to Xavier...then he jumped again to OSU, and Bill Self & Roy Williams weren't worried about being called nomads when they jumped around from school to school moving up the ladder a few million bucks at a time.

If someone offered to double, triple, or better to my salary and give me a 5-year guarantee I think I'd jump at the chance. There are plenty of Wright St.-type programs to come back to if you fail

I know and you guys both make good points, I'm just trying to look at the other side of it. Yes indeed, turning down that kind of loot would not be easy.

I guess it depends on what's important to the individual.

Bill Self and Thad Matta, I agree. Good examples of those who have moved freely. Roy Williams? He stayed at Kansas for 14 years before getting a chance at his true dream job in UNC. I'd hardly call that nomadic.

Brownell took over a bad team and in just one year went 23-9 and an automatic NCAA bid over Butler.
Home crowds went from 3000 to over 10,000.
This guy will not last long at WSU.
