  • Magic on the Hilltop.

    Hello Gang,

This is only my second post ever on the Bradleyfans site. I only recently discovered it. After tonights win, and half a dozen celebratory beers, I felt compelled to share my feelings.

I grew up in Peoria, I went to Woodruff and then Bradley. I graduated in 1997. I remember going to countless fieldhouse games with my dad when my main priorities were playing under the bleachers and throwing paper airplanes made from programs. I remember getting pregame autographs at Carver Arena from players like Luke Jackson, Anthony Manuel, Billy Wright, Curtis Stuckey, and Trever Trimpe. I remember the Les/ Hawkins era, when you just knew that if Hawkins had the ball in the last minute of a close game we were going to win. I remember how exciting it was to walk through the quad as a student and see guys like Aaron Zobrist and Anthony Parker walking to class the morning after I had cheered for them against I.S.U.

Well, I live in South Carolina now. I make it back to Peoria 4 or 5 times a year and still manage to catch about 2 games a year. The rest of the games I listen to on my computer on WMBD. Occasionaly I will pay to watch a game on bubraves.tv, but I actually like listening to Dave Snell and Joe Stowell and hearing the Peoria area commercials. It makes me feel like I am back at my at my kitchen table when I was twelve years old listening to Bradley on the rqadio with my dad and drinking a Coke.

Today I went to a sports bar here in Charleston because it was the only way I could watch the game. There were only about 6 people in the place. I was the only Bradley fan. There was one guy with a Northern Iowa hat and his wife. When Franklin hit that off-balance three I was yelling and banging on the table all by myself. I will be there again tomorrow.

I have been there with Bradley through the ups and downs, but it sure is good to be up again. After the run we had last year and the over achieving year we've had this year, its fun to be a Bradley fan again. I really think Jim Les was a wondeful pick as coach and it is paying off.

I can't wait for tomorrow. Who knows? We beat 'em once already.

There is magic in the air on the hilltop once again.

I have met a couple people down here in St. Louis who were big Bradley fan but no longer live in the Peoria area. And they did not know about Bradleyfans.com. So they were excited to hear about the site that can allow them to keep up with info about the team. Success like Bradley had last year, and this year has generated increased interest in BU basketball, and the number of new signups has surged.

I love hearing people stories about their memories of Bradley-
Feel free to post what your best memories are.

Briefly, mine involve the 4 years I was a Bradley student. I am dating myself a bit, but I started at BU in 1967 and graduated in 1971. My freshmen year was Joe Allen's senior season. He was the prototypical Bradley player. He probably didn't get too many other offers out of high school, but turned into an All American post player under Joe Stowell. BU students could get into the Fieldhouse free if you had your student ID punched earlier in the day. Some of the matchups with Louisville, Memphis State, Wichita State, etc., were fantastic. I have been fortunate to end up living in the Peoria area since then and have missed only a handful of games since then.

Welcome to the board Peoriakid. Great post.

DaCoach... so you solicited ONLY 1 couple to come to this board? I sure hope you have pockets full of those biz cards (like the one you gave me) about this board to hand to EVERY Bradley fan you run into down there.

I have given quite a few of the cards out here, but most fans I have talked to already know about the site. But I'll keep trying until I find the last of the fans who haven't heard about us.

My favorite BU memories are so many. My first game was in 76 I believe versus Loyola... I was 6 but I still can remember Jimmy Carother, Greg Smith Bobby Humbles and of course Roger Phegley from that era. The Fieldhouse was home in the winters. I used to go down by the BU locker room and slap the players hands before every game. Eventually, Tony Barone befriended me and would give me a program or just stop and say hi. In 79/80 versus New Mexico State he invited me to come into the locker room before the game. I got to sit on Robert Jenkins' stool and watch Dick Versace give his pregame talk. That team won 9 games that year and that was one of them, talk about a kid feeling great. I can also remember being cracked on the rear when I took it upon myself to boo Larry Bird, maybe that was why he only had 4 that night

As a teenager I worked from 86-88 at the Civic Center as an usher. I used to stand in the endzone at the BU end. I got to stand on the court when Hersey broke BU's all time scoring record, see us score I beleive 148 versus Cal Santa Barbara, and will never forget Hawks 63 at Detroit, Hawks shots and JL's passes at Drake and at Dayton and how it felt to win the Valley tourney in Peoria.

As an adult BU memories are great also, the win at home versus Old Dominion in the NIT was about as loud as I had ever heard the Civic Center, seeing us come back from 20 down versus Tulsa, The Pepperdine game in JL's first game was also very memerable.

This is only the second valley tourney I have missed since it moved to STL in 1991. The first one was Deon's shot... definitly the wrong tourney to have missed LOL I am not in STL this year either, so I really hope they make me pay by winning it all.

But the best memory I will ever have of BU was simply the 2006 season and team. In my wildest dreams I would have never imagined us, BU as a sweet 16 team in the NCAA tourney. Sitting in the Dave and Busters here in Houston watching us play Kansas and having people ask me who BU was too by the end everyone completely into BU and beating KU was amazing. Then to win versus Pitt and the feeling of simply joy will not be forgotten. I flew out of the Houston Airport that next day wearing my BU colors and getting great jobs etc throughout my travel. I found myself the night before Memphis not sleeping but dreaming of US BU winning and going to the Final 4, never ever thougth that something like that would ever happen.

BU for me is the one and only team I care about. Very few people I know who are not BU fans truely understand why I am the way I am about BU but it is who I am and that will never change.

                Charge on BU.

It's great being a BU fan now days. My first game was at the Armory, so I'm really dating myself, Coach. I spotted for one of the guys who ran the big individual scoreboard at the Fieldhouse. My favorite all time team is the 32-3 team from 85-86, lead by Hersey and Jimmy. 2 class guys. I figure I am the only Bradley basketball coach to be undefeated against Big 10 competition. I was honorary coach when they beat Northwestern that season. I'll be going to a sports bar tomorrow here in Mesa to see if they can get the game on one of their many tv sets. Win or lose, I love this team. GO BRAVES

Nice post, PeoriaKid. I also graduated in '97, so i'm sure we were at a lot of the same games, watching AP, Billy Wright, Funches, Zobrist, Deon Jackson, Pollard and the rest. Those were 4 solid years of bradley basketball, but nothing like these past 2. My brother and I spent about an hour this afternoon on State St. in Madison, WI trying to find a bar that actually was able to get the game. I ended up watching it in my brother's basement (he has satellite). Went nuts at the end of course.

I admit that I stopped following Braves basketball for a few years there. There's obviously little or no coverage of the Valley here in Wisconsin, but this site is now my hookup to what's going on and makes me feel like a real fan again.

Here's to a good effort tomorrow, and hopefully we'll come out with a win.

What Kind of Kool-Aid Drinker Am I?

What kind of fan am I?

Q: "Who would win if Bradley played the Bulls?"

My Answer: "Is the game in Peoria or Chicago?"
