  • Report: Minnesota already has next coach selected

And it is not going to be Jim Molinari, according to this source.

"Dan Monson, the former Gophers men's basketball coach, who was fired Nov. 30, said he is convinced that Detroit Pistons coach and Minnesota alum Flip Saunders is set to be his successor and that the deal was concluded before he was let go."

If there's anything in this article that does bother me, it's a couple of odd and conflicting comments by Dan Monson that seems to suggest he would have done a whole lot better than Jim Molinair had he stayed on as head coach, although he does praise the job Molinari is doing.

"it's been harder on him to watch the Gophers lose on television as they did Saturday than it was from courtside when he was the coach.

"It's worse, because you can't do anything about it..."

When the season started, Monson said he had no idea the Gophers... would fall to 3-12 in the Big Ten and 9-20 overall.

"Two years ago, when we won 21 games, we started that way, too. We were 2-3 to begin with, but then we won about 10 games in a row to get confidence up."

Monson praised his replacement, interim coach Jim Molinari.

"He's done a great job under tough circumstances," Monson said. "I think Jim is a great coach, but it takes a combination of things -- it takes players, it takes coaching, it takes confidence, it takes some luck."

There's also a mention that Minnesota might hire BOB KNIGHT

Wow, hiring Knight would be a horrible decision. It would be good to sell seats, but I really question his recruiting ability nowadays, and his old offenses aren't that good anymore, I will give him credit on D. Also, Minnesota should release a public service announcement - Notice: Injuries to Players, Fans, Coaching Staffs, and any persons on the Minnesota campus, incurred by, but not limited to, choking, head injuries due to chairs, and angry IU fans will are not the responsibility of Minnesota University.

Wow, Bob Knight coupled with a raised floor, you could some serious injuries result from that. It would be like Monday Knight Raw on Minnesota game nights.

I LOVE Bobby. And if he were to get the Minnesota job, I would go to games at UIUC in maroon in gold to cheer him on!

Wow - why all the hate for Bobby?

MacabreMob, I'll come to your defense!

I agree, Bobby graduates players. He gets the most out of them despite so-so recruiting (though word is he has his best recruiting classes in a long time on their way the next couple of years).

His players are clean (ie: no drunk drivers, rapists or druggies). And if he catches anyone who does any of the above, out they go!

Is he perfect? No. But not many people are. And yes, he does have a soft side and a sense of humor, both prominently on display the day he won his 880th game. AND, he will give you the shirt off his back if someone needs his help.

If that doesn't show people how much Knight has meant to the game of basketball, than all I can say is that I don't ever want to hear anyone come crying to me the next time a Bob Huggins or Clem Haskins type screws up another program!
