  • A new wrinkle to the rushing the court

What about the Syracuse - Georgetown game last night?

I'm not sure how many of you listen to ESPN radio, but Mike & Mike got into an interesting debate on whether a team that has been as successful as Syracuse should EVER storm the court, especially if they are having a good season (20 wins).

A couple different points were discussed:
-Yes, they should be able to do it because it's college and you want to be able to "celebrate" with the players.
-Yes, they should be able to do it because the younger students weren't around for the National titles.
-No, because when you win National titles, you should have the attitude that you've been there before and expecting to beat everyone on your home floor. Rushing the court makes it look like it was an upset.
-No, because Syracuse isn't a bad team. They won a conference game at home against a good opponent.

Jim Boeheim was brought on later in the show and he had no problem with it. Tom Izzo (Michigan State) was also on the show a week ago and he supported the idea as well.

Now, I have seen the debate about "safety" a million times about the rushing the court/field. I don't want to get into that here. I am curious to see what people believe are the right and wrong times for a prggram to be rushing onto the floor. Pretend that there was no threat of safety problems.

I understand the 'Cuse rushing the court last night for a few reasons:
    - They beat a top-10 team (although Georgetown was only No. 10)
    - It was against a longtime conference rival
    - It was Senior Night
    - The win probably sewed up an NCAA bid

Personally, I don't think they should've stormed the court last night. Syracuse has a very rich tradition (including a nat'l title) and they only beat the No. 10 team in the country. Now, if it was No. 13 SIU playing at Bradley, that would be a different story. But I don't think Georgetown at No. 10 is storm-the-court worthy.

It seems like rushing the court has gotten out of hand this year more than any other. I think a lot of it might have to do with people trying to end up on ESPN. Indiana, which has one of the richest basketball histories in the country, had its students storm the court after beating Wisconsin. I understand Wisky is a top-5 team, but it seems weird to think of INDIANA rushing the court after beating WISCONSIN. On the other hand, you have a school like Duke, and I can't think of one time they stormed the court there. Even against UNC.

Why not? As a student I don't remember us being a national power. If we beat a huge team at home I'm going to rush the court. If the Illini had beat OSU or Wisconsin at home should the freshman and sophmores not want to storm the court. IMO as long as it's not getting out of control and it's a big win. Why shouldn't they? Things like this are what make college BBall. I thought Boehem made great points, you want us there, you want us excited, but then after we get a huge win were supposed to sit quietly in our seats? Come on!

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Duke fans rushed the court on this game (Dockery hits a 40-footer to beat Virginia Tech):

Hmmm...can't remember for sure if they did, but that would be one of the few times it's happened in the last decade or so.

Here is one of our previous discussions, and it includes a link to an article
about a kid who was severely injured and left permanently paralysed by an incident where fans rushed the court.

You can decide if you think it is always harmless.

I am rushing the court when we beat Butler... at Butler(I'm from Indiana and have a buncha friends at Butler, so I have plans to go see the game already). I don't really think Butler can live up to this year, but I just wanna beat em.

Good luck getting past probably 20-30 PCC security guards.

I hope you mean Iowa State. And even then, they're not "storm worthy."

Interesting you mention Indiana State because one of my friends said someone was trying to get the students to storm the court Saturday night. Not exactly sure why...
