  • Doug Elgin on WMBD....

MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin was on WMBD this morning. I was only able to catch the last couple of minutes of the interview but here are some snipetts of what he had to say...

He was asked if he thought the selection committee will take into account JC's injury and the fact he was out for eight games....he said they will definately take that into account. "The committee does a much better job keeping tabs on injury situations than they did a few years ago....

When asked if he thought the pundits still had egg on their face after the success of mid-majors last year... he said "I think so, the key is to not let them off the hook. We (the MVC) need to keep having post season success and show that we are not a one year fluke...we should have six teams in post-season play and hopefully we will enjoy the same type of success that we had last year....

Last, he was asked about the MVC tourney...he said that ticket sales have been great....about 13,000 all session tickets have been sold. The lower bowl is SOLD OUT! He mentioned that tickets are still available and that some people may not attend all the sessions (when their school is not playing) however, he thought more people would stay for other sessions this year as opposed to past years due to the overall competitiveness of the league.

That's basically what I heard....if anyone else heard the beginning of the interview please let us know what else was said. Thanks!

Wichita State lost their final four games and went 8-13
over the final two months of the season after running out to an 8-0 start.
They finished 16-13 against D-I opponents, and nearly 170 D-I teams have 13 or less losses, so with only 65 NCAA teams, and 32 NIT teams, that means 83 teams with as many or fewer than 13 losses will go nowhere.

So....I suspect the NIT will take Wichita, but it isn't a slam dunk.
If WSU misses the NIT, then the Valley will have only 5 postseason teams.
Some over at Drake also hold out slim hopes of an NIT bid...but their record in the NCAA's eyes (against D-I competition) is 14-14, so the best they can do without winning the MVC tournament (which isn't going to happen) is 16-15.

I can't imagine the NIT taking a team with 15 losses, an RPI over 100, and who finished one mere game out of the cellar of the conference.

I think Wichita St has a shot, but they will be battling teams like maybe Hofstra, Akron, Nebraska, Kent, Santa Clara, Bucknell, George Washington, Hawaii, Fresno St, Dayton, St Joe's, Washington and UConn for a spot.
