So why not just let him back on the team, we might just need him in the Big Ten Tournament.
    Presto-- done.
I check this site out often and really enjoy all you guys have to say, so I hate to come out of nowhere and argue like this. But come on, have any of you attended college in the last ten years? A 19 year old being drunk at school is a mortal sin now? Get off your Big Ten bashing high horse...

And comparing this to the Chief is just ridiculous.

    Very well said Jabbarbattler!

However, because basketball players are seen more as public figures compared to the average college student, and seen somewhat as role models by the youth in their community, they must be held to a higher standard. They know this and their coaches know this and, thus, are held to this higher standard. In addition, when the school gives you a free ride you have a responsibility to uphold your end of the deal and not embarrass your school. (Ray Brown knows this all too well)

I'm not saying this is fair. But, it is what it is and these kids know this. If you are a player you must learn to accept both the praise and the criticism.

Jabbar, I honor your point of view...and let me clarify mine.

I am not slamming on the kid, because I know kids at college do this.
And he's certainly entitled to do it if he wants, except.....

All colleges have agreements that the players sign when they receive a scholarship, and all those agreement include a drug and alcohol policy.

Remember, the kid and his family agree to this policy.

Then no sooner do these kids violate the policy, then the coaches forgive them and put them back on the team within a wekk or less, generally.

BUT-- every once in a while...when the kid is a bit player or not a star, then the coach uses the violation to boot the kid.
You want the links, I have 'em
Here Pearl BOOTED Hendrix but only after he violated team policy 3 times.

But when a kid has talent, like Wingate, Pearl let him back on the team after three violations of the same policy!

Here are just a couple representative university drug/alcohol contracts:

        Note this from Michigan State:
"Should a student-athlete be suspected of consuming alcohol ...If the test is positive, .02 or greater, the student-athlete will be withheld from practice or competition and referred to his/her team physician and a substance abuse counselor for assessment. "

"If there is a reasonable suspicion that a student-athlete is using alcohol ...the student-athlete may be referred to his/her team physician for medical evaluation and/or testing.
...... Should the team physician determine that reasonable suspicion exists, the student-athlete will be required to provide a specimen sample for testing. ...

(failure)......he/she will be suspended from the intercollegiate athletics program until the student-athlete has complied with the plan."

Jabbar--- I am only speaking as a citizen and a taxpayer asking why everyone seems to be protecting Jamar, giving conflicting stories, and nobody has looked into the obvious fact that several of the Illinois players were at a Monday night (very late) party drinking heavily with underage players.

Those other players who violated the team rules and even violated state laws regarding underage drinking and supplying liquor, and being given a free pas son this one.

Something stinks...and the PJ Star staff demanded full disclosure when Bradley had an issue with an overpayment from a summer job, and when they thought there was a secret agenday on campus expansion, so why are they now demanding we forgive, forget, stop asking questions, get on with things, and leave the whole issue alone?

And all this from a guy who's an admitted big fan of the Illini and who posts on the Illini fan board ?

I understand what you're getting at. I was only referring to that Purdue kid. I just threw that Big Ten thing in there because it seems like many posters on here are quicker to jump on BCS conferences for any transgressions. I know that the Illinois situation looks bad and I wouldn't want to defend what's going on there.

I'm just saying to look at the reality of the situation. This kid is a person first, a student second and an athlete third. A majority of underage college kids drink. I have hung out with MANY Bradley athletes while they were drinking underage. Any agreement that they signed was the furthest thing from their minds. I understand playing basketball at Purdue is different than playing a relatively minor sport at Bradley, but it's still the same idea.

Maybe it was a bad move by Painter to let him back on, but that doesn't seem to be any reason to villify the program. There are plenty of other legitimate things to complain about in the NCAA, this just doesn't seem very significant to me.
