  • Ex-BU Player Tim Bankston

As many might already know, Tim Bankston played a short time on the hilltop for Dick Versace, and is now the head coach of Calument City T.F. North, who are ranked inside the top-5 teams in the state.

I am not sure if any records are ever kept on this, but Tim thinks he might have a shot at being the
VERY FIRST person ever to win the IHSA State Basketball Championship as BOTH a player and a coach.

Does anyone know if that's true?

Bankston was on the 1984 Chicago Simeon team that won the Class AA title, and his T.F. North Meteors are presently 21-2 and ranked by most at #2 in the state right behind Bankston's alma mater, and defending state champion Chicago Simeon and Derrick Rose.

By the way, here's a little story about Tim and TF North

I actually have a brother that graduated from TF North, and one of the other most notable grads was Mike Tomczak.

Wasn't Tim the one that had a super 360 move in a game at Loyola?

I don't remember that move, but he did finish his career at Loyola.

The one thing I remember Tim for was a power-slam dunk over Benoit Benjamin in a game against Creighton at the Civic Center.

        Ahhh... dang memory slips me.

Maybe it was Embookoo Nagoogoo ( sp? ), aka Boo.

Boogo had the reverse that went off the very top of the back board, not sure who it was against.

Bankston had a ton of hype and very little substance.

Bankston's TF North Meteors won last night over #14 ranked Thornwood (Eddie Curry's old school)
            56-49,

They win the SICA Championship, and the SICA has been labelled the toughest conference in the state.
The regoinal has the #2, #7, #8, and #14 ranked teams in the state all in the same regional.

Does anyone know why Bankston transferred?

The 360 move and power slam were on consecutive trips down the floor at the end of the Creighton game, at home, in OT. All for naught, as BU lost.

Bankston was in the same recruiting class of 1984 with guards Hersey Hawkins, Len Bertolini, Jerome Childs, as well as Trevor Trimpe, Donald Powell, Jerry Thomas, and Greg Jones. Bankston wanted to play point guard, but was also behind Jim Les, who had 2 more yearsd of eligibility. The reason givien then was that he wanted to transfer closer to home, but I think he saw that he would not get a lot of playing time.

just ran across this interview with Kyle Cain (who was discussed a few months ago here)
and he gives some credit to his coach, Tim Bankston...
" (toughness)..is just something inside you. Maybe it has to do with where I
come from, playing against all those guys in Chicago. In Chicago, if a guy is
supposed to be this or that, guys just don't back down from him. They make
him go hard. And that's kind of how I was brought up. My high school coach
from Chicago, he made me play that way."
