  • Illini Coaching Staff Coverup?

Based on a couple separate reports I am beginning to suspect some serious ethical issues involving the Illinois coaching staff.

In this morning's Peoria Journal Star, this statement is made,
'A member of the Illini coaching staff takes Smith to Carle"

I have also seen several published reports that Jamar left his unconscious friend in the car as he went into the apartment to call one of the assistant coaches.
Also, one of the Champaign news stations identified that an assistant coach was called by Smith and then came quickly to the apartment complex in Savoy, arriving shortly after the paramedics arrived, as the bystanders at the apartments called 911.

An interview with the woman who called 911 was on one of the Champaign news stations (WCIA) last night in which she said,
"the car's driver entered the parking lot and went into an apartment. He and at least one other man came back out but made no effort to summon help and left to go back into the apartment. The injured man in the car (Carlwell) regained conscousness and began honking the horn. That's when the woman called 911."

    The state's atty. said:

???‚¬?“(Smith) was able to drive the vehicle back to College Fields Apartments (where Smith lives and where the duo had been drinking in another apartment).
???‚¬?“Two witnesses saw the damaged vehicle pull into the parking lot and saw a tall man exit the vehicle and enter the apartment building.
???‚¬?“They also saw an unconscious passenger in the vehicle. They then saw the tall man and a second man return, approach the car, and then leave and go back into the building.
???‚¬?“The witnesses called 911 at 11:40 p.m. No other 911 calls were made. Sheriff???‚¬?„?s deputies and U of I police arrived and found Brian Carlwell unconscious in the car. He was removed from the vehicle and taken to Carle Hospital.
???‚¬?“Further investigation revealed that Smith had gone to his apartment in the College Fields complex. A number of other basketball team members were in the apartment. ???‚¬?¦ At approximately 1 a.m., witnesses and U of I officers located Smith and transported him to Carle Hospital, where he was treated and released.???‚¬??

So between about 11PM and 1PM Jamar Smith, several of the other Illinois basketball PLayers who had also been drinking, and at least one illinois assistant basketball coach were all there at the apartments, but none of them called 911, none of them aided Carlwell, and none of them gave any assistant or information to the police, until around 1AM.

What was going on from 11:40 or so until 1AM?
Clearly Jamar, the other players, and the Illinois assistant coach were thinking only of themselves and how to dodge the inevitable issues that were going to arise.
And why is nothing being said nor done about all those other drinking basketball players and the coaching staff that seemed to go along with all this horrible judgement?
    Just who is accountable here?
And just whose tax $$ is paying all these guys' multi-hundred thousand dollar salaries and scholarships?

Certainly there are a lot of facts that are fuzzy.
Whose apartment were all the players drinking at?
Does the staff know about the alcohol at the parties with underage players?
Why the delay of nearly an hour from the accident to getting BC to the hospital?
What and who were Jamar and teammates thinking about while they dallied with a seriously injured friend in the car?
What and when were the coaches involved and if they were called, why were medical and legal officials
never notified and had to find out from bystanders in the parking lot?
Who supplied the alcohol to underage players?
    Where was it bought?
Why did it take until 1am for the law enforcement people to "locate Smith and transported him to Carle Hospital"
    Was he hiding?
Why have Illini officials remained totally quiet on all this other than to say Jamar is done for the year?

Can the Black Helicopters not be far behind? Actually, this is a very serious matter. On the other hand it deflects all the satellite surveillance that had been directed at Zook's recruiting practices.

Is there anyone who thinks there was some degree of hush-job and coverup with McBride, Head, and Spears?
        I do.

Those helicopters would have been put to better use giving Smith and Carlwell a ride home

To be completely honest, the other BBall players drinking should not suprise anyone, and in the grand scheme of things, especially in Peoria underage drinking is nothing more than a traffic violation. An expensive ticket that does not go on your record assuming you do not challenge it and lose. I understand that by all means underage drinking is not only against team rules but against the law as well. As a minor I really don't feel like there is a problem drinking under the arbitrary age of 21, however choose I do choose not to do so often due to the consequences, rather than the inherit 'immorality' that some associate with it. Where is does cross the line is when you put others in danger, as Jamar and Rich both did. I think Rich should have faced much steeper penalties and Smith should not play BBall again, and both should have quite a weight on their conscious. However I think the focus with the other players should be on why the players did not do something as opposed to if they were drinking. Just a couple other things to consider - As an RA here at Bradley we've had many problems with a student calling the police to help a friend and s/he get in trouble for drinking, when they are doing the right thing, something I think is hardly fair. While I'm by no means condoning what the Illinois players did, and don't think Jamar should be allowed to transfer and play anywhere(he surely could not stay at U of I, even just for school), lets not throw blame at other players that may or may not have been there, even if they were doing something that is, technically, wrong.

I do think U of I really needs to look at letting McClain go. I have never had a problem with McClain before this but I think that arriving at that scene without calling the cops or telling someone else to, while he comes is unexcusable.

There is a business opportunity in there somewhere. The number of athletes in a D1 program x number of potential driving related incidences = confidential driver/escort service. Anytime. Anypalce. We'll get your blue chipper home safe & tuck 'em in.
