  • Was Danny Granger Recruited away from Bradley?

Yea.. I know it is an old subject, but it comes up again because of an article yesterday in the Albuquerque press.

Head coach Ritchie McKay at New Mexico is doing horribly, and half his team is still made up of disgruntled transfers, bar fighters, brawlers, etc.

Finally one of the local sports writers call a spade a spade and says this haibt of getting everyone else's reject players has to stop, and even seems to be calling for McKay to be fired.

But in the piece here's how he describes the transfer of Danny Granger from Bradley to New Mexico:

"McKay found salvation - a three-year extension - in the recruitment of Danny Granger from Bradley"

I wonder if the guy realizes it is illegal in the NCAA to recruit another team's players?

    I can't access the link.

Is this guy making suggestions that Granger was illegally recruited or is he offering documented proof that such a thing occured?
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

      C'mon T.....let it rest.

I don't think the author of the article has any knowledge of "illegal recruiting" of Granger.....just a poor choice of words on his part.

Don't you think it's time to move on?? Let's focus on the kids we have.....not the ones that got away!

Lets just say I heard more of the backstory on this than I'd like to have known and yes, he was recruited away from Bradley. But he also didnt like going to school at Bradley for a few reasons.

How about this, when the U of I faithful lets Pearl rest then I for one will let the way Granger left to New Mexico rest. Until then nope not gonna happen.

But then again Im really in a horrible mood today, losing anytime sucks but last night well really has me not friendly today, seeing something about Granger and asking BU fans to forget about it really is piling on today.

But this isn't a Danny Granger issue, this is an NCAA violation issue by a fellow member school.
The reason I think it is relevant to ongoing discussion is that whenever Bradley has had even the slightest finding of an NCAA violation, we are hit hard and hit fast with the NCAA issuing sanctions.

But as I have shown time, and time, and time again, there is a full hypocrisy at work here, in that other schools who are "BCS" football-type schools, generally get off totally free or are hit with completely farsical penalties.

This Danny Granger saga was a perfect example, with New Mexico being told that one of their assistants had to go to a compliance seminar, and that was the full extent of the penalties. In all the years I have been posting on this issue, I have yet to see ONE example of a BIG BCS school being given serious penalties, unless they commit the most outrageous violations like Kentucky did with cash in the envelop....even then you have to go back many years to find such an example.

Didn't Oklahoma and Kelvin Samspon break all kinds of NCAA records with how many rules they volated, yet Oklahoma got almost nothing, Kelvin got a little recruiting limitation, and the only guy hit hard was the head coach at Fresno State!! (a midmajor!)

It seems that bringing up this topic must irritate some people, but it is only because I have a passion to someday see the mid-majors be treated equally to the BCS guys.
It is an issue that is every bit as important as Women's Rights and Religious Freedom.

I'm usually with ya T, but New Mexico is not in a BCS conference. And I'll creat a little scenario here for ya to think about. If Granger stays: 1) we don't need to recruit a post player, which means we don't pursue Cellus. I think it worked out for everyone. We had a void to fill and we filled it with what ended up being one of the best players in BU history. I definately see how this could anger you, Granger was a great player and we lost him unfairly, but we made the sweet 16 with Cellus.....would we have done it with Granger?

cellus is one of the best of BU history but I bet Granger would have been better considering he was a first round draft pick and starts every now and then for a NBA team.... where is cellus right now??? oh wait overseas.......

This may be one of the dumbest things I've ever read on this message board. Thanks for the laugh.

While I'm not dissapointed with cellus, you saying that, really shows that you don't know the point of a message board and that maybe you should think before you post, and he definately has a valid point, so maybe your the one saying moronic stuff. Keep posting Heemy.

New Mexico was given a miniscule punishment for flagrant tampering, and they were treated quite nicely by the NCAA given the circus scene when they held a news conference to trash fellow NCAA member, Bradley, and trumpet to the press those ridiculous claims of slavery, mistreatment, and food being withheld.

Also, I never said I wish DG had stayed at BU. NO___ that is NOT what I wanted either then or now. we ended up much, much better without him. Maybe both POB and Cellus would have gone elsewhere had we had him here causing dissention.
Even in the season Granger transferred, we did way, way better after he left!
In the 14 games we played with DG we were 4-10 with the only four wins being over ridiculously weak preconference foes such as Alcorn State, Chicago State, and D-II Arkansas-Monticello.
After Danny left, BU immediately went on a 3 game winning streak including a win over league leading UNI, and finished out the rest of the conference season over .500.
Nope, I don't lament Danny Granger leaving, buit the way the NCAA sat by, let it happen, and then fail to dole out any punishment, simply encourages schools to continue cherry picking the best players from the mid-majors....U of I tried it, too, and grabbed Marcus Arnold!

You never cease to amaze me T.

ISU fans have been saying this for a few years about the Arnold situation and how St. Bruce stole him from the team and you always seemed to defend St. Bruce and defend his innocence. You have personally called me out several times on this board regarding my feelings on St. Bruce and the Arnold case and the Dentmon case.

However if it helps your argument for the BU case involving Granger, you are quick to use the Arnold ISU/Illinois example. Sorry bro, but this drips with hypocrisy.
