  • Update on Rick Malnati, BU Class of '81

Rick Malnati was a great guard during the Dick Versace era, but was somewhat unheralded.
He has now gone on to become the head basketball coach at Winnetka New trier High School.
Here is a picture in this thread...

They are having a good year in this, Malnati's 11th season as head coach, and are headed into the state playoffs with a present record of 20-6...and here, one of the Tribune's prep writers says this about Malnati:
"Don't be surprised if unheralded New Trier makes a deep playoff run. The Trevians have faced top-notch teams in their nonconference schedule--Proviso East, Warren, Thornwood, Farragut, Von Steuben, St. Patrick--and are led by perhaps the best coach in the state, Rick Malnati. With 6-5 Peter Boehm inside, 6-6 Jack Boehm outside, 6-5 freshman Alex Rossi, Patrick Romey and Morgan Stevens, New Trier has some talent. There's also help inside from 6-4 Tim McCrary. To provide more inside presence, Malnati will soon elevate 6-9 freshman Fred Heldring to the varsity."

Here's a bit more about Rick.

By the way, it is no secret that Rick knows a thing or two about making the best pizza in the entire state!

Old number 21, good back up point guard gave BU good solid 10 or so minutes off the bench.

Hate that pizza though, especially the deep dish. Peoria has many better pizza pies.

Yea...as much as I hate to ever admit this....
the "New York style" thin crust is way better than the "Chicago style" thick crust in my taste bud opinion.

whoa whoa whoa...I live in SoCal and when I go back to Chicago, Malnati's is the first place I go, and it isn't to see his Bradley picture on the wall.

In his day, Malnati was one of those fan favorites because he came off the bench and hustled.

I wonder if the success of Jim Les, is causing an increased interest in coaching by ex-Braves. "And now, Head Coach of the _____,
        Harold McMath."

First of all, I love Malnati's pizza..... but one look at me and you could tell I like ALL pizza!

Ol' #44 Harold McMath is one of my all time favorite Braves. We could certainly use some of his rebounds tonight!

I heard Robert Jenkins is in New York doing work with kids. Not sure if it is true or not, just what I heard from a BU official.

Jenkins was a great guy, we had some classes together and was truely a nice person to be around.

                Harold

I heard that Harold McMath has a sporting goods store in Australia. I think you can find him in a websearch. Another
                hustling player...

Head Coach Rick Malnati's New Trier knocked off highly ranked Loyola and the Jordans.

Daniel Poneman of illinoishsbasketball.com was there, and filed this report, but one line in the report is pretty funny,
"Our plan was to double team the pi$$ out of him"

Thanks for posting my game recap tornado.
malnati is always good for a funny quote after a win.
Im going to see Von vs Evanston tonight.
If Evanston wins, then there will be another huge rivalry game in the sectional between Evanston and new Treir

Robert Jenkins was one of the first truly gifted athletes I ever saw. This guy could jump out of the gym. He was about 6'4"-6'5" and consistently outrebounded bigger players. He wore a red wrist band and when he jumped you could always see it above everyone else's hands. Anyone remember that?

                          Jenkins

Jenkins was a MAN! I also liked Ford from those days. What was he, 6'4" or something? Loved watching those guys against WSU's bookends Levingston and Carr. Anyone remember BU holding mighty WSU to 11 second half points to come from behind and win at The Fieldhouse?

Jenkins was also sucker punched and got a broken nose and had to wear one of those protective masks; nothing like an Aggatucci"s pizza , not a fan of the deep dish.
