  • Crisis Looming in St. Louis Public Schools

A very complex issue is about to befall all the public schools in St. Louis....and it could conceivably affect athletics, especially upcoming state playoff basketball.
Hearings are now in progress by which the State of Missouri will take over full control of all the St. Louis public schools from the local school districts, possibly as early as Feb. 28 when the schools are likely to have their accreditation revoked.

"we are convinced that conditions in the St. Louis Public Schools have deteriorated to the point where action by the state is warranted."

This is a very serious and controversial issue and mostly a political and educational issue, but if it occurs, it could make all the St. Louis schools ineligible for the Missouri version of March Madness, as only accredited schools are eligible.

Hopefully a resolution can be found.

While I understand the disappointment these athletes may face, the main goal of the institution is to graduate its students. If this is not happening, some form of action must be taken. This has become an unfortunate trend for metropolitan public schools. Athletic programs at many of the Indianapolis public schools has deteriorated, as most athletes have moved outwards toward the suburbs.
