  • Matt Webster... I can't stand guys like him!

He pushes for position, gets the ball, bangs his way to the basket, throws up some unorthodox garbage ball, flails his arms, falls down and then gets rewarded with free throws. I just can't stand this type of player. The refs fall for his garbage all game and keep giving him free shots. The last guy like him was Danny Moore from SMS, remember his puke shots?

Both those guys were winners, though. We love to hate them, but I would also love to have Webster play for my team. Too bad he'll leave UE without ever seeing postseason play beyond the MVC tournament.

Ya I hate Webster when we play them but as Coach said, he's one of those guys you'd love to have on the team. I really hope we don't see them again though.

I could not agree more coach. Webster has been kicking our @ss since his sophomore year. He does what he has to in order to be successful. He's probably less athletically gifted than most of the players he plays against. Athletically, Sommerville, O'Bryant, and Andrews are on another level than Webster, yet Webster always seemed to give them fits and make our lives as BU fans difficult. I think BU is fortunate to have taken 5 of the last 6 from UE. Webster is strong, skilled, and knows the game, which helped him overcome his athletic shortcomings. Like DC said, I would take him on my team in heartbeat. He deserved better than he got in 4 years at UE.

I just get frustrated in how much "reputation" appears to play in the refs calling their game. Some of Zach's fouls were totally justified, but I feel like a couple of them were totally anticipation fouls. Strickland and Webster were completely fouling out if they were Zach. I guess the point is, get the right rep, but I just wish refs could call a game without ref playing a factor.

this begs to be said.....and I am realistic enough to know the game is changing and isn't likely to go back, but...

The way the game was developed and the way it was played for 90 years was to try to win with nice passing, good shooting, and decent defense. Bradley is just fine in all those categories.
But somewhere in the early 1980's it started in the pros, then filtered down to the college game....that banging, collisions, and trying to draw the foul became the norm for the game in the paint. So, somehow the refs decided to let some of it go.
Now they let a lot of it go and call the foul pretty much exclusively on the defender. When's the last time you saw Webster actually get called for the foul when HE INITIATES THE CONTACT?
I know, I know...that's the way the game is played nowadays...and we did get one offensive foul on Webster when Evansville played in Peoria, and it helped turn the outcome!

But I much prefer to watch the style of play Bradley employs, real basketball with nice passing and shooting.
I hope and pray that Shaq-style, collision/banging/50-60 fouls per game basketball does not become the norm at the college level.

Been out for years. But yes, he served time for a cocaine trafficking offense. Not good. I think he's back in Illiopolis.

Rick was a great player from tiny Illiopolis HS. He was an outstanding athlete for a man his size as Donewald regularly used him on the point of the full court press and he got many a steal and thunderous dunk.

To be fair, Webster couldn't carry Lamb's jock.

Webster is a very poor man's Brian Cardinal.
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

I agree. How is that a charge on JC when he went to the basket, shot a little floater off the backboard with very little contact from either himself or the defender, yet webster comes down and treats the defender like a locked door that he is trying to break through, then travels, then shoots a shot that he never got above his chin, and then gets a foul called on the defender he just got done assaulting. Its incredible. And forget about a Webster illegal screen, loose ball, or over the back foul, won't happen ever. There is a better chance of Lavin winning the Slam Dunk contest Saturday night than Webster being called for one of these violations.

Webster is a fine player, and a good representative of the Missouri Valley. But in all honesty, Evansville needs to even do better. In Webster's four years Evansville has been mired in the basement of the Valley.
Matt Webster has 1370 career points and his running partner Strickland just passed 1000, but what has it helped them?

Cellus had 1493 points in just 3 years at Bradley, and helped BU get better every year, culminating in a Sweet Sixteen appearance.
In time I think people will finally give Coach Jim Les his due for the caliber of players he has been recruiting.
Cellus will be playing pro ball 10 years from now, while most of those other guys will be selling insurance.
