Mike-- the guy at the center of the fight for New Mexico was their point guard, Jamaal Smith.
I have to think a certain degree of frustration set the stage for this fight.
First, frustration because New Mexico has played so very badly of late and is so far at the bottom of their conference race, that their hopes of postseason play are all but evaporated.
But also Jamaal has had a very rough couple months.
He is a juco who was brought in to be their full time, starting point guard, and yet given tons of playing time, his stats make most walkons look like superstars.
Here are Jamaal's stats in Mountain West play:
36% FG%, 29% 3-pt%, 6 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 1.5 assists per game.
If Daniel Ruffin had those numbers even in just a couple game stretch, he'd be sent packing to the end of the bench, but this may be the best Jamaal is going to do.
And the bad news is they don't have anyone else to play PG.
You'd think just by accident one of his passes would lead to an assist more than once a game or so.
For a major college, full time, starting point guard to have stats this bad, is part of why New Mexico is doing so poorly.
His 1.5 apg in league play rate the 5th highest among the starting 5 on the team.
