  • Bradley point guards

Since Jim Les...have there been any full-time BU starting point guards besides:

    Anthony Manuel
    Charles White
    Billy Wright
    Eric Roberson
    Marcello Robinson
    Daniel Ruffin

With all the player turnover in the nineties. I find it fascinating that there has been that one position with so much staying power. If Ruff returns to play next season. That will mean all of the above guards played four full years at BU.

Willie Scott preceded James Allen Les....
???We all want Bradley to win. If our methods and visions for that are different, then so be it. Don't ever attempt to tell me I am not a fan!???

I don't think Eric Roberson should be considered a full-time point guard. He and Rob Dye shared point guard duties back when they played, and I would almost defer to Rob as closer to the true point guard.

I thought about that...but either way they both played four full years. I just find it interesting the amount of stability that position has maintained in the midst of everything that has happened.

Eric Roberson was one heck of a defender. That was a fun team to watch.

Was Willie Scott a Brave for all 4 years?

No, Willie transferred to Bradley from Hillsdale College (a division II school in Hillsdale, Michigan) in 1980. He sat out the 1980-81 season and played 2 seasons for BU, but it was a great 2 years. He played point guard for the 1981-82 team that won the NIT, and was co-captain (along with Eddie Matthews and Barney Mines) of 1982-83 team.
He played at Martin Luther King High School in Chicago.

For some reason I did not think he played here 4 years.....what would his #'s have been after 4 years........and it is my belief that Curtis Stuckey could have been the top Peoria born player @ BU if he would have played here for 4 years!

Curtis Stuckey still holds the Bradley record for the highest career scoring average, despite the Bradley history of great scorers (Hersey, Mitchell Anderson, Roger Phegley, Chet Walker, etc). Curtis Stuckey averaged 24.5 ppg in his 2 seasons (23.7ppg and 25.1 ppg). He is the only player in the top 50 scorers in Bradley history to accumulate his numbers in just 2 years. He's just ahead of Hersey Hawkins' 24.1 ppg for 4 seasons (14.6, 18.7, 27.2, 36.3 ppg in his 4 seasons).

Curtis, who was listed at 6'1" (not counting the stovepipe hairdo) played just 2 seasons at Bradley after transferring from Drake. IMO, Curtis, though he was a very good player, should not be compared to Hersey. Stucky benefitted from playing just his junior and senior seasons at BU and playing only in Stan Albeck's high scoring pro offense. He was placed into Hersey Hawkins' old spot in the offense. He was not the shooter that Hersey was, and took a lot more shots to get his points than Hersey needed.
Hersey played 2 of his years before the 3-point shot was introduced (I wonder how many more points he would have scored!), but the great majority of his points came from outside. Still, his shooting percentage was an amazing 53.9% for his career!
Curtis Stucky shot 25.0% and 37.4% from 3-point in his 2 seasons, and 43.2% overall.

By the way, getting back to the subject-- Bradley's point guards:

BU's two PG this season, Daniel Ruffin and Will Franklin are #1 and #2 in the Valley this year in 3-point shooting pct. among point guards.

Did you know that Drake's Al Stewart has NOT hit even one 3-pointer all year!

Just checking the stats-- here are the stats for assists among players in the MVC--

Note the 3-point shooting percentages among the assist leaders. Ruffin and Will Franklin are clearly the best shooters among those that handle the ball a lot. And remember, Daniel was playing injured earlier in the season. Bradley fans need to appreciate the quality of our guards!

Daniel Ruffin is closing the gap between him and the league leader in assists, Brooks McKowan. In fact, in just MVC stats, Ruffin is currently #1 in assists--
