Jim Les' UC-Davis played Dominican (DII) in an exhibition game...
3 or possibly 4 of their projected starters (TJ Shorts, Joe Mooney, AJ John, Matt Neufeld) sat out as precautionary measures and still UC-Davis clobbered them 87-59

Their other exhibition was a "secret scrimmage" against Pacific

Their football team has surprised everyone - have now risen to #3 in FCS Rankings

Illinois is going to struggle in the Big Ten again, as Brad Underwood just can't seem to land any big men to compete at that level. In tonight's game against Illinois Wesleyan, they played only 2 forwards in the game. Redshirt Junior Kipper Nichols, who is listed at 6'6", but that is probably stretching it a bit, played 24 minutes and had 3 points and 4 rebounds, and 6'9" Euro freshman Giorgi Bezhanishvili played only 14 minutes.

They got good production from some of their numerous guards, but if they expect to win in the Big Ten playing almost exclusively guards, they better not expect any different results than the last couple seasons. Their last winning Big Ten season was 2009-10.
Da'Monte Williams had 1 point in 20 minutes of play.
Also, the future for Underwood may be in jeopardy as he has not got any commitments for the class of 2019 or any future classes yet. Recruiting misses in his first couple recruiting classes at Illinois have caused him to rely on quite a few borderline Big Ten-level recruits, and grad transfers.

another exhibition that was surprisingly close...

Auburn is picked by some in the Top 10 - even Top 5...
but they struggled against DII Lincoln Memorial before winning 76-62
but it was fairly even for the first 27 minutes...and was even still a four point game with about 7 min left...

Dayton beat Capital 89-71- Josh Cunningham had a double double with 11 pts, 11 reb
Capital is a DIII that was 12-14 a year ago...
Dayton drew over 12,000 for this exhibition game!

ISU plays Augustana in an exhibition game at 12 noon today.
Augustana is Division III, and members of the CCIW (College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), the same conference Carroll University, and Illinois Wesleyan, among others. Augustana was picked #1 in the CCIW Preseason poll. They are also ranked #3 nationally in the D3 preseason rankings.
Augustana was predicted to win the 2018-19 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) men's basketball title according to the results of the conference's annual preseason coaches' poll announced Wednesday.

You don't seriously think ISU is concerned do you? I assume this is a joke. My guess is that since ISU's non-conference schedule is loaded and kicks in immediately with challenging games that Coach M just wants to get MY and KE on the floor for a bit to make sure there is no rust.
Cheering with pep and vim for the white and purple!

This was still not necessary. Malik could have gotten his rust removed playing in the prison yard.

Augustana actually led for the majority if the 1st half but they do not have the size nor athleticism to guard Fayne or Yarbrough..
ISU scored the final 9 points of the 1st half to take a 41-28 lead.

and if they weren't concerned then why in an exhibition game are they going almost the whole way so far 14-17 minutes, with starters...
Hein hasn't played at all and subs like Chastain & Idowu - who played 22 minutes against DII Lewis - are playing far less against D3 Augustana.

edit - I guess Hein tweaked an ankle and won't play today...

Augustana back within 9 - after falling behind by 18...........
.. Fayne out - 10 min to go

edit --...now the lead cut to 8 pts...Fayne now back in the game as obviously the game is getting way too close for Muller's liking -- radio guys complaining about the bad calls...
the numbers tho say ISU getting to the line a bunch more and getting way more foul calls

ISU is shooting over 60% - getting a lot of layups
.. Augustana shooting just 35%- strange that the game is this close

Augustana now back to within 7 but they don't have anyone to match up with Fayne who has 19 pts, Yarbrough 15

Fayne now has 4 fouls but Augustana can't pull any closer...still hanging within 7-11 pts

ISU holds on to beat Augustana 82-74
                            Stats-

The game was a lot closer than anyone expected. Augustana was within 4 points (78-74) with 27 seconds left, but then were forced to foul.
ISU had mostly starters in the game for the final several minutes to try to hold onto the lead.
According to the radio crew, Dan Muller was not happy with the sloppy play, poor defense, poor free throw shooting (14-24 with several missed front ends of 1 and 1's) and 19 turnovers.

ISU barely pulls out the exhibition victory but not 'til Augustana threw a little scare into them...making a couple runs in the final few minutes - even getting within 4 pts in the final minute & ISU needing to make FT down the stretch.

....even the broadcasters kept saying this game was much tighter than it should have been or than any of the fans thought it would have been...
Muller got forced to play his starters right to the end...

                              ISU 82 - Augustana 74

                              Phil Fayne 23
Milik Yarbrough 16, 6 turnovers- starters all played 24-30 min
                              Zach Copeland 17
                              William Tinsley 9
                              Rey Idowu 4
