  • Bradley-Northern Kentucky scrimmage report

After checking a few sources, I have a report about the closed scrimmage that Bradley played yesterday against Northern Kentucky University. It was played at the 18,000 seat Banker's Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Formerly known as Conseco Fieldhouse, prior to 2011, it is the home of the NBA Indiana Pacers, WNBA Indiana Fever, Indiana state high school tournaments, as well as the Big Ten Conference tournament most years.

Northern Kentucky won the Horizon League last year with a league record of 15-3, and an overall record of 22-10. They were edged out in the Horizon League Tournament, and played in the 2018 NIT.
NKU was just picked a close 2nd in the Horizon League preseason poll for 2018-19. And their 6'8" senior big man Drew McDonald was named the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year for the second year in a row. He averaged 17.0 ppg and 9.6 rpg last season.

I am not able to reveal too many details publicly, other than the fact that the two teams played a regulation 40 minute game with real officials and all regulation NCAA rules. Bradley won the game over Northern Kentucky University.

I have a more detailed report, which includes some really impressive and exciting facts about the game yesterday, and I will send it to anyone who Private Messages me. I guarantee you will be very happy and optimistic about the coming season when you hear more about this game (unless you are a Northern Kentucky fan ).

...and ask for a copy of the report. Please note that it could take a few hours to respond to all the requests, and everyone will get the same report. Sorry that I cannot reveal my sources or answer specific questions about the game.

Northern Kentucky returns the TWO TIME preseason Player of the Year..and they are a good team....

I think our guys can and will (barring injuries) play with anyone in this league and with anyone on our schedule...

btw- just saw a report that Minnesota played Creighton in a closed scrimmage - and Minnesota won by 2 pts
...what's interesting is that the complete stats were immediately made available!! -- LINK
Elijah Childs' high school teammate Christian Bishop made his debut for Creighton - he didn't get to play much - just 8 minutes...
...but he hit his only shot and grabbed two rebounds

Villanova beat N. Carolina, 89-79 Villanova's Phil Booth had 41 points!!!
    St. Mary's beat Stanford
Miami beat South Florida - and of course Bradley beat NKU

wow - check how strong the Horizon might just be...

Youngstown State was picked near the bottom of the Horizon (picked 9th out of 10 teams)...
and they just clobbered Niagara by 20 in a closed scrimmage - Niagara was picked in the upper half of the MAAC (Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference)

Creighton played Minnesota in a closed scrimmage yesterday.

The NCAA has specific rules (Bylaws 17.3.3.1‐(a) and 17.3.5.3) regarding these closed scrimmages
There are a handful of college basketball games being played this week ... but don't tell anybody! Elite teams are facing each other, highly-touted freshmen are experiencing the college game for the first time and new coaches are getting their initial look at their teams in game situations.

“The practice scrimmage may not be included on the institution’s published season schedule and may not count against either team’s won/loss records,” the NCAA rule reads. “Only athletics department staff members and those individuals necessary to conduct the practice scrimmage may be present during the scrimmage. Further, the institution must ensure the scrimmage is free from public view and media are not in attendance.”
“The institution may not post the score and/or statistics in a newspaper, on the participating institutions’ Web sites or any other location,” the rule continues. “In addition, an institution may not provide the score and/or any statistics to any type of media outlet.”

So you'd think schools would be careful about allowing information to get out for fear that the NCAA might actually enforce their own rules. I know Bradley is.

But here is a tweet from the official Creighton basketball account posting the score, stats, and complete box scores-

And here is another tweet from the official Creighton account with a post-game interview with Creighton head coach Greg McDermott openly discussing the secret scrimmage, despite the rules specifically prohibiting it.

And they are not the only one. There are a number of schools, mostly the Power Conference schools that openly defy the rules.
Here is the official Minnesota basketball twitter account tweeting all the same things-
          Box scores-

Interview with Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino openly discussing the scrimmage results-

And there are multiple articles in newspapers with scores, stats, and other details about the scrimmage-
Freshmen Gabe Kalscheur and Daniel Oturu shine with 25 combined points in Minnesota's secret scrimmage win Saturday at Creighton. Eric Curry fully cleared and returns from injury

Now I am all for openness, and against the gestapo tactics of the NCAA, but why do they allow the big boys to openly defy the rules regarding these scrimmages? Yet mid-major schools have to be far more careful, because they fear penalties by the overbearing NCAA, which has a long history of enforcing their rules unevenly.
If they aren't going to enforce their own rules fairly, then they are a joke.
They should just eliminate all those rules about secrecy and privacy, and allow anyone to attend the games and report on them.

A bit surprising. But Washington is no slouch either. They were a 21 win team last year, return all 5 starters, and return more production from last year than any other major conference team in the country. They were picked 3rd in the Pac 12 preseason poll, and received some 1st place votes.
OREGON has been chosen the favorite to win the 2018-19 Pac-12 Conference mens basketball title in a vote of media members who cover the league

but Washington schooled them with their best returning player (16 pts, 8.4 rebs, 57% shooting) out with injury

They should keep the NCAA but fire everyone in it. Then hire all new independent people to enforce the rules as Ms. Rice stated in her report

Good idea, though the NCAA has too much power and has proven that they will never police themselves.
In the current FBI trial which will go to the jury today, despite overwhelming evidence of massive and extensive cheating by many top schools, the NCAA is nowhere to be found. They did not attend the trial or cooperate with the FBI, nor have they even commented in any way whether they will take punitive action against any of the cheaters. I don't expect any kind of action by the NCAA.

Even when Rick Pitino was caught paying for players and was fired by his own school (Louisville), the NCAA sat silent and did nothing. Louisville was on probation from their last scandal involving their coaches paying strippers and hookers to entertain recruits. And you'd think if there was ever a case where the "Death Penalty" was justified, it would be for a school with blatant violations involving cash payouts of $100,000 or more to land players while their program was on probation. Yet the NCAA did virtually nothing!

It is like they are in complete denial. They are a joke and as corrupt as can be.
