  • 2018 Lindy's Preseason College Basketball issue

Here's what they say about the MVC

    - slightly more than 2 pages of coverage but most of that was Loyola & their 2018 run in the NCAA

-author of the MVC section is Lindsey Willhite- a Chicago guy (but an ISU grad) who hasn't even worked as a sports writer for several years..
He is currently the director of public relations (sort of the Sports Information Director) for the Chicago Wolves -
the minor league hockey team that plays their games at Allstate Arena (the old Rosemont Horizon)
    - I have to seriously wonder exactly how much this guy is even exposed to MVC basketball ??

If you do an exhaustive Google search on him and the MVC you will see that the last thing he wrote that covered anything to do with MVC basketball (other than his Lindy's piece) was in 2011
(and that is evident as noted below..)

-anyway- he picks the MVC like this:
    1- Loyola obviously - he's a Chicago guy
    2- SIU
    3- ISU
    4- Bradley
    5- Indiana State
    6- UNI
    7- Valparaiso
    8- Missouri State
    9- Drake
    10- Evansville

Player of the Year Clayton Custer
Newcomer of the Year UNI's AJ Green
1st Team All MVC- Jordan Barnes, Clayton Custer, Armon Fletcher, Phil Fayne, Milik Yarbrough
2nd Team All MVC- AJ Greene, Darrell Brown, Jr., Cooper Neese, Marques Townes, Cameron Krutwig

    Top defensive player- Elijah Childs

and he seems to make a few mistakes...
such as NOT KNOWING that the THREE ISU transfers (Boyd, Hillsman and Fisher) are ineligible because of transfer...he seems to think they are going to play.

Not a bad set of predictions overall, but one I would question a little is placing Cooper Neese on the 2nd team All-MVC and ignoring some pretty solid MVC players who have proven themselves already like Keyshawn Evans, Kavion Pippin, Tywhon Pickford, Elijah Childs, and several others.
Neese will not be eligible to play until after the first semester, since he transferred to Indiana State after the school year started last year. So he will not have played competitively for almost 2 years when he finally becomes eligible. And although he had a great high school career in Indiana, he is coming from a relatively small high school and has never played a minute of Division I basketball. I would be very surprised if he is a 2nd-team All MVC player immediately.
Even a far more heralded 4-star incoming player like A.J. Greene, who is also picked as a 2nd-team All MVC, will have an adjustment phase as he starts his D1 career at UNI.

Never a fan of Lindy's. The question about writers having very little background in the conferences they are predicting is spot on. They always hurry to get out first, and the content suffers. I personally never read it and wait for the better sources like Street & Smith.
Cheering with pep and vim for the white and purple!

It??™s a joke. Any Valley beat writer could do better, but this guy was probably cheaper.

Give me Blue Ribbon for college basketball, Phil Steele for college football.
        BRADLEY BASKETBALL
        -2 NCAA Title Games
        -3 NCAA Elite Eights
        -4 NCAA Sweet 16s
        -4 NIT Championships

I loved Street & Smith. I would check the bookstores once a week until they came out. Top Notch!!
