there is a report that the Mountain West will set up a challenge series vs. the A-10...
Maybe they were looking for weaker competition - the historically top A-10 teams (Dayton, Rhode Island, UMass, Davidson, George Mason, St. Bonaventure, VCU) - all buried deep in the middle of the pack in their Preseason Poll this year

The MWC-MVC Challenge began in 2009 and the initial agreement ran for four years, 2009-2012. It was not renewed beyond the 2012-13. However, it was revived in 2015 for what was then described as another 4-year agreement. 2018 will be the 4th year of the present agreement, so unless the agreement was quietly extended, it appears this may be the final year.

I don't see why the MWC couldn't or wouldn't do both. The B1G has challenges with the ACC and Big East. I would think the Valley teams they play are better than their replacements, but maybe they don't want to be overly taxed.
If they don't the MVC should look to the WCC or MAC (assuming the bottom 2 teams are left out) or maybe CUSA (again, assuming without bottom 4 teams). Top midmajors need each other more than ever before, with P5 schedules filling up.BRADLEY BASKETBALL

...of course there's no reason the series couldn't pick up again somewhere down the road but now that the MWC is dealing with the A-10 it would be less likely for a few years.
But I like Mikovio's idea - maybe a 3-way deal can have each school from the MWC, MVC, and A-10 pair up and play an opponent from each of the other two - such that every school in the three best mid-major conferences gets TWO quality opponents! Plus there would be two separate Challenge Series for each school and also an OVERALL 3-way Challenge Champion!
In a July interview he said:
"MVC-MWC Challenge:
As it enters year four of a four-year contract, Elgin explained that due to a
scheduling conflict with the Mountain West’s conference tournament in 2019,
the MVC-MWC Challenge will not be immediately renewed. However, Elgin
described the challenge series between the conferences as a success."

So maybe the new commissioner of the Missouri Valley, Jeff Jackson, can work out some kind of challenge between the MVC and Atlantic-10. That seems to make more sense anyway, that the MWC-A10 Challenge. There would be far less travel involved, and there is the possibilities of some better rivalries with a couple A10 teams (St. Louis and Dayton).
