Let me preface this by saying I have the highest respect for Geno Auriemma and his UConn women's basketball program. They have made it to 19 Final Fours including the last 11 in a row. They have 11 National Championships under Auriemma, and they own the 2 longest winning streaks in women's college basketball history (111 straight from 2014-2017, and 90 straight from 2008-2010). And the were 36-0 this season and the #1 overall seed going into tonight's 2018 NCAA Tournament semifinal game against Notre Dame.
But IMO, it is good for the women's college game when someone else upsets them.
Tonight, Notre Dame pulled off a huge upset by beating UConn 91-89 in overtime on a last second shot in the overtime in one of the two the semifinal games-
UConn was also undefeated last year going into the 2017 NCAA Tournament semifinal game against Mississippi State, and lost that game 66-64 in overtime, to also finish last season 36-1.
Notre Dame advances to the National Championship game Sunday against Mississippi State, who advanced by beating Louisville tonight 73-63-
Mississippi State will be trying to win their first National Championship and also trying to avenge their loss in last year's National Championship game to South Carolina. Notre Dame won one National Championship in 2001, but have finished second four other times prior to this year (2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015).
